Farm machinery: say what exactly you’re looking for

Buy farm machinery: from a power tiller to a combine harvester

Start with the area and the crops

Machinery for a kitchen garden and for hundreds of acres is chosen by completely different logic. For a small plot of a few hundred square metres a walk-behind tractor or a power tiller is enough. A farmer with tens of acres needs a tractor and implements, and a small holding can get by with a mini tractor.

Crops are harvested with combine harvesters, and fodder for cattle with forage harvesting equipment.

Equipment for tillage, sowing and crop protection

A tractor does not work without implements. To prepare the soil you need tillage equipment: ploughs, cultivators, harrows. Seeds go in with seed drills, and fertilisers and crop protection are applied with sprayers and fertiliser spreaders. Look separately for attachments and extra equipment.

What to put in your request

  • type of machine — power tiller, tractor, seed drill, sprayer;
  • area and crops — how much land and what you grow;
  • power — hp for tractors, hp and engine type for tillers;
  • drive type — 2WD or 4WD, wheeled or tracked;
  • compatibility — hitch type (category), power take-off shaft;
  • condition and hours — new or used, running hours;
  • kit — rotavator, plough, trailer, PTO;
  • city and delivery;
  • budget, if you want to state it.

Common mistakes when choosing

Before buying an implement, check which power take-off (PTO) shaft the tractor has and how many revolutions it gives: this decides whether a rotavator, mower or spreader will fit. A common mistake is to buy a powerful machine without the right implements, or an implement that does not fit the tractor's hitch. Another is not counting the cost of servicing and spares: they are easier to find for popular models. On a used machine, check the hydraulics, engine, transmission and rear axles, and ask what work it did before.

When choosing between new and used, weigh the warranty and the option of finance or instalments against the lower price: ask in the chat whether they are offered. Demand is highest before sowing and harvest, so buying ahead is cheaper. Ask about service and spares in your region too: a simple breakdown during sowing costs more than the price gap between two models.

For a power tiller also look at the working width of the rotavator and whether it has reverse. For a small farm do not chase power: a machine that is too heavy compacts the soil more and burns more fuel on small jobs.

Start a used machine cold, look at the colour of the exhaust, and listen to the hydraulic pump and the gearbox in different modes. Check the PTO, the hitch, the lift, the tyres and the brakes. Ask whether there have been major overhauls: after them a machine can run well, but the price should reflect that. Before the deal, match the engine and frame serial numbers with the papers and write a handover note listing the kit.

How BlaBlaPrice helps here

You write one request about what you need, and farm machinery sellers reply in the chat: what they offer, price, kit, delivery. The platform shows the best-value offer first, and seller reviews are visible next to each one. Contacts stay hidden until you choose. Details are on the “How it works” page. For construction and quarry machinery, see the “Heavy equipment” section.

Questions and answers

Which is better for a small plot: a power tiller or a mini tractor?

For a few hundred square metres a power tiller is enough, and from about half a hectare a mini tractor is more convenient. The choice depends on the jobs and whether you need attachments.

How do I avoid buying an implement that doesn't fit my tractor?

Give the tractor model, hitch category and power in the request. Sellers will offer only compatible equipment.

What should I look at on a used tractor?

Running hours, the condition of the engine, hydraulics and axles, and any oil leaks. It helps to see the machine at work.

Can I buy machinery with delivery to my farm?

Yes, write the village or town in the request. Sellers will give the cost and time of delivery.
