Not cooling, noisy, leaking: how to describe the fault
The technician needs to know exactly what is happening, because both the cause and the price depend on it. A fridge that does not cool at all and one that cools badly are different cases. A compressor that hums without stopping may point to a problem with the thermostat, the sealing or the load. Water at the bottom of the compartment is often linked to the drain hole, but not always.
Describe the symptom in plain words, without a diagnosis: “the freezer has not been freezing for two days, the fridge section is warm, the compressor starts.” This is more useful than “the compressor is broken”.

What to state
- Type of fridge — single-door, double-door, side-by-side, built-in, chest freezer; frost-free or direct-cool.
- Make and model — for example, LG GA-B509, from the sticker inside.
- The fault — not cooling, leaking, noisy, shows an error, compressor does not switch off.
- Age — how old the appliance is.
- Visit — usually you need a technician at home.
- Area and when — urgent or on a particular day.
- Warranty and budget, if you want to name one.
Example: “LG GA-B509 double-door fridge, 7 years old, frost-free. The freezer freezes but the fridge section is warm, and I can hear that the fan is not working. I need a technician at home in Dubai, urgently. Warranty of 6 months, budget up to AED 110.”
How to compare replies
Ask how much the visit costs and whether it is deducted from the repair. Find out whether the price is for labour with parts or separate. In frost-free models the usual causes are the evaporator fan, the defrost heater or a sensor, and the prices of these parts differ. If it is the compressor or a refrigerant leak, the repair is usually more complex and costly. Compare it with the price of a new fridge.
It is a good sign when the technician asks for the model and symptoms instead of quoting a figure “blind”. Also ask whether they give a warranty on the part and on the labour, and for how long.
Small things that save money
Before the visit, check that the plug is in the socket, that the thermostat is not set to minimum and that the drain hole is not blocked with ice. Clear access to the back panel. Warn the technician if the voltage often fluctuates in your house. It may be the reason for repeated breakdowns, and then a stabiliser is worth considering.
