What you need from the device
A hair dryer dries and styles. A straightener flattens hair, a curling tong makes curls, a multi-styler combines several attachments, and a hot brush dries and adds volume. Also think about who it is for: a home model is fine for the house, but a salon needs a sturdier one that can take many hours of daily work.

Details that affect your hair
For a straightener or tong the plate coating is important: ceramic and tourmaline are usually gentler than bare metal. Temperature control helps not to dry out thin or coloured hair, which needs lower settings. In hair dryers, ionisation reduces static, and a cool setting fixes the style.
Ask about cord length and whether it swivels, the weight of the device and the noise level. If you use it regularly, the weight is noticeable. Warranty matters too, because heating elements fail over time.
For thick and curly hair, look for a more powerful dryer and a wide diffuser attachment: it shapes curls gently without frizz.
