Landscaping and earthworks on your plot: from levelling to lawn

Earth first, beauty second

Landscaping begins with earthworks: stripping soil, levelling, shaping a slope, digging trenches for utilities, drainage, filling with topsoil. Only on a well-prepared base does a lawn grow evenly, paths not sink, and water not collect by the house.

So separate the tasks in your request: what needs doing with the terrain, and what is already planting. Planting trees and shrubs, laying a lawn (turf or seeded), paths, retaining walls and flower beds are listed separately.

What to put in your request

  • Type of work — levelling, trenches, drainage, lawn, planting, filling with soil.
  • Scope — area in sq ft or cents, trench depth or fill height.
  • Machinery — mini excavator, tractor, manual work; whether machinery can get onto the plot.
  • Conditions — slope, soil type (clay, sand, loam), waterlogging in the rainy season.
  • Materials — whether the grass and soil are yours or the contractor’s.
  • Soil removal — whether it must be hauled away or stays on the plot.
  • Address, timing, budget.

Example: “Ajman, a plot of 6,000 sq ft with a slope and clay soil. I need the ground levelled with a mini excavator, topsoil brought in and a turf lawn laid. Machinery can reach the plot. Haul away the surplus soil. Finish by the end of the month. Budget up to AED 2,600.”

How to compare offers

Earthworks are often priced by machine hours, landscaping by area, so different offers may use different units. Ask for them to be reduced to the same units, and check:

  • whether delivery and the cost of soil, sand, gravel or turf are counted;
  • who removes surplus soil and where it goes;
  • whether base preparation for the lawn, rolling and the first watering are included;
  • whether there is a warranty on the lawn and care advice after laying.

How searching works on BlaBlaPrice

You describe the plot and the job in one request on the home page, and landscapers and owners of earthmoving machinery in your area reply in chat. They can see where their offer stands, so they can change their price or terms. Contacts stay hidden until you choose a contractor. Details are on the “How it works” page.

Common mistakes and the season

The biggest mistake is laying a lawn on an uneven base or one littered with building waste. The second is not planning where the water goes: without drainage, a low spot turns into a swamp. The third is letting heavy machinery onto a wet plot: it wrecks the soil, and everything has to be levelled again.

The best time for a lawn is the season after the rains and early winter, or just before the rains; in peak summer it needs much heavier watering. After earthworks you often need construction of paths or retaining walls, and plumbing and utilities for irrigation and water.

Questions and answers

Turf or seeded lawn?

Turf gives a quick result, but costs more and needs a well-levelled base. A seeded lawn is cheaper but grows more slowly.

What is drainage on a plot?

It is a system for carrying away excess water that prevents flooding. If your plot gets waterlogged, say so in the request and contractors will suggest solutions.

Can I hire machinery without an operator?

Usually machinery works with an operator. Check in the offer what is included in the hourly price.

Does the buyer pay for BlaBlaPrice?

No, it is free for the customer. The contractor pays a small fee only when you choose them.
