Low loaders for machinery: how to buy or rent well

Where to start when choosing a low loader

A low loader is bought for a specific load, not “in general”. First decide what you will carry: an excavator, a roller, a tractor or a combine harvester. The load capacity, the number of axles and the platform length depend on that.

Always keep a margin on weight. If your heaviest machine weighs 22 tonnes, a 25-tonne low loader will barely cope, while a 30–35 tonne one will run easier. But the bigger the low loader, the more it costs, and so does the tractor unit to pull it.

What affects the price of a low loader

  • Design: an extendable platform, a detachable gooseneck and hydraulic ramps cost more than a simple frame design.
  • Number of axles and make: Goldhofer, Nooteboom or Faymonville cost differently from local or rebuilt trailers.
  • Year and frame condition: cracks, patches and signs of repair near the axles and the neck lower the value a lot.
  • Papers: whether there are registration papers, whether it has passed inspection, and whether there was an accident.

Buy or rent

If you need a low loader for one or two trips, renting with a tractor unit and driver is usually smarter than buying. For weekly hauling, your own low loader pays back faster. You can write in the request that you are considering both options, and compare them together.

What to put in your request

  • Load capacity — for example 40 tonnes, with a margin over the heaviest load.
  • Number of axles — 3, 4 or more; this decides how the load spreads on the road.
  • Platform — fixed or extendable, the length you need and the loading height.
  • Ramps — hydraulic or mechanical, and whether you need a detachable neck.
  • Make and year — or “not older than 2010”.
  • Technical condition — running, serviced, no repairs needed.
  • Buy or rent, city and budget.

Example: “I will buy a used 4-axle low loader, load capacity from 45 tonnes, extendable platform up to 18 m, hydraulic ramps, not older than 2010, no repairs needed. Inspection in Dubai. Budget up to AED 150,000.”

How it works through BlaBlaPrice

On BlaBlaPrice you write a request once, and sellers and low loader owners answer in the chat: what they offer, for how much, with photos and terms. The system shows the best-fitting offer first, and next to each one you see reviews of the seller. Your phone is hidden, and only the one you choose gets your contacts. Details are on the “How it works” page.

How to compare offers

Compare by the same parameters: axles, platform length, ramps, year. Ask for photos of the frame from underneath, the state of the tyres and brakes, whether it has air suspension, and the life of the axles. Ask them to spell out delivery to you separately.

A common mistake is to buy a low loader without thinking of the tractor unit: the fifth-wheel load and the type of coupling must match. The second is not checking the width and dimensions: a load wider than the permitted limit usually needs a special permit, so check with the transport authority. The third is trusting “no repairs needed” without an inspection.

If the load is lighter, look at a car transporter trailer or a semi-trailer, and you will find other options in the “Trailers / motorhomes” section.

Questions and answers

Which low loader should I choose for an excavator?

The key is the machine's weight and size. Add a margin to its weight and choose the number of axles and platform length to match. If you are not sure, write the excavator model in the request, and sellers will advise.

Which is better: buying a low loader or renting one?

For one-off hauls, renting with a tractor unit is usually more practical, while for regular hauls your own low loader often pays off. In the request you can say you are considering both.

What should I check on a used low loader?

The frame near the neck and axles for cracks and patches, the ramp hydraulics, tyres, brakes and papers. Ask for photos from underneath and the working history.

Do all sellers see my phone number?

No, contacts are hidden. You pass them only to the seller you choose.
