A simple rule: allow about 60 cm of table edge per person. A table 140–160 cm long suits four to six people, but six will already feel tight. For big families and guests, an extendable table works well: it stays compact day to day and opens up for a celebration. Round and oval tables feel cosy and have no corners, but they take more room in the middle. Don't forget space to pull the chairs out: keep 70–80 cm free around the table.

Commercial places need furniture that survives heavy use: reinforced joints, upholstery that resists spills and cleaning, and stackable chairs to save space. Check the weight of the chairs, since staff move them often, and the finish, which must stand up to cleaning products. Say “for a cafe” and the number of seats in your request, and sellers will offer commercial ranges.
What to look at in offers and which mistakes to avoid
Compare more than the price: look at the load a chair can take, the thickness and material of the frame, and the density of the foam in the seat. For extendable tables, check the mechanism: how easily it works and the size when fully open. Ask whether the chairs come with the table or must be bought separately, and whether different batches can vary in shade.
