If a company works by the hour, find out the minimum visit time and the number of workers, because that decides how long the cleaning takes.
After-renovation cleaning usually costs more than normal cleaning, because it needs special products and thoroughness. It helps to add photos of the state of the place, so the provider can estimate the scope more accurately. Also ask who is responsible for damaged property: a broken item is not rare.
What to agree in advance
Find out whether the cleaners bring their own products and vacuum cleaner, or whether you need to provide yours. Agree on how the work is checked: inspect the result at once, while the team is still there, and point out any faults. Ask whether complaints are fixed free of charge and within what time.
For regular cleaning it is handy to agree on a permanent cleaner, so they know where things are. If you have valuable or fragile items, put them away beforehand or say what not to touch.
Cleaning is busiest before the festive season and at weekends, so book a few days ahead. After renovation, order the cleaning when all the workers have left and the dust has settled, otherwise you will have to clean twice. In the rainy season, ask about drying time for floors and carpets.
For regular cleaning, ask whether there are better terms for several visits in a row. If there are children or people with allergies at home, ask for hypoallergenic products without a strong smell.
