How to find a dishwasher for a restaurant or canteen

An honest job description

A dishwasher washes dishes, cleans the washing area and sometimes helps clean the kitchen. It is physical work: long hours on your feet, hot water, cleaning chemicals. The more honestly this is described in the request, the fewer people leave within a week. For the venue, that saves the cost of constant hiring.

Say whether there is a dishwashing machine. If there is, the job is mostly loading it. If dishes are washed by hand, the workload is quite different.

What to write in the listing

  • Duties — washing dishes, washing large vessels, cleaning the kitchen and washing area.
  • Type of place — a 100-seat restaurant, cafe, canteen, banquet hall.
  • Place of work — city and area, for example Sydney.
  • Schedule — evening shifts, 2-on-2-off, 5-on-2-off, weekends.
  • Salary — pay per shift, for example $8.52.
  • Employment — formal contract, side job, seasonal.
  • Experience — usually not required.
  • Meals — whether staff are fed during the shift.

Example request

“A 100-seat restaurant in Sydney, needs a dishwasher for evening shifts. Washing dishes and kitchen equipment, cleaning the washing area. 2-on-2-off schedule, $8.52 per shift, free meals, formal contract. No experience needed.”

What to agree before the first day

Show the washing area and equipment: the machine, sinks, drying racks. Provide work clothes: rubber gloves, an apron, non-slip footwear. Decide separately how late the shift runs: in a restaurant, dishes are washed until closing, and the shift can drag on. If overtime is paid, say so.

Ask about allergies to household chemicals and explain how much of each cleaner to use. These are small things, but they protect both the employee and the venue.

Explain the routine: food scraps are removed from plates first, then dishes are soaked or put in the machine, and greasy pans are scrubbed separately. Agree who takes out the rubbish and whether mopping the washing area is part of the job, so there are no arguments about the limits of the work. A good sign is a candidate who asks about peak hours and where the washing area is: they are thinking about the real work.

How it works through BlaBlaPrice

You write the listing, and it is checked for ads and stray contacts. Candidates reply in the chat, and you see who is ready to start and on what terms. Only the person you choose gets your contacts. A request stays active for 7 days and can be extended. How it all works is on the How it works page.

Questions and answers

Is dishwashing experience needed?

No, usually experience is not needed. Write “no experience” in your request, and people looking for simple work will reply.

What is best to say about meals?

Say plainly whether staff are fed and how many times. For many candidates this is a strong argument.

Can I look for a side-job worker?

Yes. It is enough to write “part-time” in your request, with the hours or days you need.

Does everyone who replies see my number?

No. Only the one you choose sees it.
