Car clips and fasteners: how to find the right ones

Why small fasteners are so hard to find

Trim clips, bumper pins, number plate holders and plastic expansion bushes look the same, but differ in diameter, stem length, head shape and number of ribs. A clip that is “almost the same” often does not lock or cracks on removal. So the most reliable way is to search by part number, or at least by the exact car model, year and place of fitting.

How to work out what you need

The simplest way is to find the number on the old part or in a parts catalogue: on Volkswagen group cars it is a code like 1J0868243. If there is no number, measure the hole diameter (for example 8 mm), the stem length and the head diameter, and photograph the old piece from different sides. The size is part of the request: “for an 8 mm hole” is much more exact than “a door clip”. One photo in the request often settles it.

Materials and sets

  • Plastic is the commonest for trim, but can crack in the cold; nylon clips of better quality have better spring.
  • Metal and stainless steel are needed for bolts, studs and holders that work against vibration and water.
  • “Clips for every case” sets are handy for a garage, but an exact replacement is better for a repair.

What to put in the request

  • What kind of fastener: door trim clips, bumper pins, number plate holder, bolts, cable ties.
  • Car model and year: for example Volkswagen Jetta.
  • Part number, if known, for example 1J0868243.
  • Size: hole diameter, length, thread.
  • Quantity: for example 50 pieces.
  • Material: plastic, metal, stainless steel.
  • Delivery and budget.

Example: “I need 50 door trim clips for a Volkswagen Jetta, part number 1J0868243, for an 8 mm hole, plastic. Courier delivery to Brisbane, budget up to $14.”

What to compare

Check that the offers are for an identical number, not just “similar”. Ask whether it is original or aftermarket and what material. Ask the price per piece at different quantities: a pack of 50 often works out better than a few pieces. For a small order, take the shipping cost into account. It helps to take a few extra at once: when you take off the trim, some old clips break, and you will want replacements to hand.

How BlaBlaPrice helps

Small things are rarely worth hunting for in shops. You write a request with a number or a photo, and sellers reply in the chat: whether they have it, the price, how they will ship. The site puts the best offer first, with reviews of the seller beside it. Your phone is hidden. Details are on the “How it works” page.

During a repair you will also need car tools, and you will find other things in the “Car accessories” section.

Questions and answers

How do I choose clips if I don't know the part number?

Measure the hole diameter and the stem length and add a photo of the old clip. Give the car model and year.

Original clips or aftermarket?

Aftermarket are cheaper, original sit more reliably. For critical points original is better, and for trim a good aftermarket one is often enough.

Can I buy just a few pieces?

Yes, but shipping may cost more than the clips. Sometimes it is better value to take a pack.

Can all sellers see my phone?

No, contacts are hidden and are opened only to the seller you choose.
