Car servicing and oil change: how to order at a good price

Start with the schedule, not the price

Servicing is not just “changing the oil”. In the service book the manufacturer states what to change and at what mileage: engine oil and oil filter, air and cabin filters, fuel filter, spark plugs, fluids, the timing belt. The interval depends on the model, the engine and how you use the car: city driving with traffic jams wears a car differently from highway driving.

So before ordering, open the service book or the manual and see what is suggested at your mileage. That way you will not overpay for extras or miss something important.

What to put in your request

  • scope of service — only oil and oil filter, a full scheduled service, fluids, spark plugs, filters;
  • make, model and engine — for example Hyundai Creta 1.5, 2020;
  • mileage — current, or the one the service falls due at;
  • materials — yours or the workshop's, the brand you prefer and the oil specification;
  • service book stamp — needed or not, which matters if the car is under warranty;
  • city, visit date and budget.

Example: “Hyundai Creta 1.5, 2020, mileage 40,000 km. I need a scheduled service: 5W-30 oil with filter, air and cabin filters, a check of fluids. A stamp in the service book. Adelaide, Saturday morning. Budget up to $50 for labour.”

How to compare offers

For a fair comparison, the prices must cover the same things. One offer may include oil and a filter, another only labour. One changes the spark plugs, another does not mention them. So ask for a separate breakdown: labour, oil (brand, viscosity and approval), filters.

On BlaBlaPrice you write your request once, and workshops reply in the chat: what is included, the price or what it depends on, when they can take the car. The site shows the best offer by substance first, with reviews next to it. Workshops see their place among the others, so they compete on terms. Your number is hidden until you choose a workshop.

Your own materials or the workshop's

Your own materials usually give you control over the brand, but responsibility for quality moves to you. If you take them from the workshop, ask about the oil approvals (for example ACEA or the manufacturer's specification) and about original or good-quality aftermarket filters. For a car under warranty, the oil approval must match the manufacturer's requirements.

Common mistakes

  • changing the oil “by mileage” without taking time into account: it ages even without driving;
  • saving on filters: a cheap filter may not protect the engine;
  • not asking for a record listing the work done and the batches of materials;
  • forgetting the fluids: brake, coolant, gearbox.

If a problem is found during the service, the next step may be car computer diagnostics, engine repair or suspension and brake repair. Everything is in the section “Car & motorcycle servicing”.

Questions and answers

How often should I change the oil?

Go by the service book: usually at a certain mileage or once a year, whichever comes first. In harsh conditions it is changed more often.

Can I bring my own oil?

Yes, many workshops agree. State the brand and quantity in the request so the prices can be compared.

Do I need a stamp in the service book?

If the car is under warranty, it matters. Write it in the request so that those who give one reply.

Is changing the filters included in the service price?

It depends on the offer. Ask for labour, oil and each filter to be listed separately.
