How to hire a shop assistant for a store, market stall or kiosk
A grocery shop assistant and a market stall assistant are different jobs
In a grocery store the assistant handles the billing counter, expiry dates, receiving stock and keeping the floor tidy. At a market stall or a meat shop there are also scales, cutting, serving at the counter and often an early start. In a boutique, neatness and the way you talk to customers matter most.
So first say honestly what the person will actually do. Candidates reply more precisely when they know whether they will stand at the billing counter or unload and arrange stock.
How to find a shop assistant on BlaBlaPrice
You write one job request in your own words, and candidates reply to you in the chat with their experience, convenient shifts and expected pay. Before it goes live, the request is checked: no ads or contacts in the text, and you get hints on what is still missing.
Your phone number stays hidden, and only the candidate you choose gets it. The job request stays active for 7 days and can be extended. BlaBlaPrice is free for employers. More details in How it works.
What to put in the job request
- The shop — grocery store, market, kiosk, and what exactly you sell;
- Duties — selling, billing, receiving stock, arranging goods, cleaning;
- Shifts — for example 9 am to 9 pm, early shifts, days off;
- Pay — per shift or per month, or a share of sales;
- Location — city, area or a particular market;
- Terms — written appointment or not, health certificate if needed;
- Experience — required or not.
Example: “Shop assistant needed for a grocery store near the main market in Sydney. Shift 9 am to 9 pm with a day off, duties: selling, billing, receiving stock. Pay $10 per shift, written appointment letter, previous experience preferred.”
What to look for when choosing
An assistant needs honesty, a pleasant manner and stamina. Ask which shops the candidate has worked in and why they left, and what they do when the cash does not tally. Ask separately about experience with a particular product (meat, vegetables, clothes).
Offer a trial shift: you will both see whether the arrangement works. Agree upfront on what you pay, a fixed rate per shift or a share of sales, so there are no arguments later.
Do not forget the seasons: around the festive season and during wedding season, footfall rises sharply, and so does the workload. If you are hiring for such a period, say so honestly and say whether extra shifts will be paid.
Also explain how stock is received and who is responsible for write-offs and shortages. A good assistant appreciates being told the rules at the start, not after the first shortage. For a new person it helps to have an experienced colleague beside them during the first shift.
