Used Subaru parts: Forester, Impreza, Legacy and engines
A Subaru engine: the code first, then the price
Subarus have boxer engines, and within one Forester generation there can be different ones, for example the EJ20 and EJ25, naturally aspirated and turbocharged. Many parts are not interchangeable between them. So in the request give the displacement, the fuel and, if you know it, the engine code (say, EJ20), plus the year and VIN.
Engines for such cars are often brought from Japan as imported units, meaning they come from a car that was dismantled abroad. That is normal practice, but then the mileage and the paperwork matter especially.
How to judge a complete engine
Ask what mileage the donor had (and whether it is confirmed), whether the cylinder compression was measured, and what exactly is in the package: ancillaries, alternator, turbocharger, intake manifold. A good breaker will send photos and a video and say what was checked. Also ask about traces of oil and coolant leaks, especially near the head gaskets: boxer engines are sensitive to servicing.
Ask for a warranty on testing and find out who pays for return shipping if the engine does not fit. An engine is heavy, so delivery costs extra. Compare offers together with that sum.
Also confirm the gearbox type (manual or automatic) and the drive: almost every Subaru has all-wheel drive, so the engine often goes together with the gearbox, and the mounts and the flywheel or torque converter have to match. If you only need a gasket set, timing parts or ancillaries, do not buy an engine: a breaker may sell the units separately.
What to put in your request
- Model and generation — for example, Subaru Forester SH;
- Part — complete engine, gearbox, headlight, axle and so on;
- Year;
- Engine — displacement, fuel, code;
- Side — for parts that come in pairs;
- Colour — for body parts;
- Condition — working, with a warranty on testing;
- VIN;
- Delivery city and budget.
Example: “Subaru Forester SH, 2010, 2.0 petrol, EJ20, manual. I need a complete engine, working, with a warranty on testing. I want the donor’s mileage and to know whether compression was measured. I will give the VIN. Courier delivery to Brisbane. Budget up to $1,500.”
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You describe the engine once on BlaBlaPrice and do not phone the breakers. Those who have such an engine reply with a price, photos and terms. The platform shows the best-value offer first, with seller reviews beside it. Sellers can see where they stand, so they often improve their terms. Your phone stays hidden until you choose a seller. Read more on the “How it works” page.
Look for other brands in the car breakers section.
