How to hire a translator: interpreting, written, technical subjects

Interpreting and written translation are different professions

A written translator works with text, has time for dictionaries and checking, while an interpreter works at the pace of conversation, in negotiations or accompanying a delegation. One professional can be strong at writing and lost in live negotiations, and the other way round. So in the vacancy be sure to state the type of translation.

Another trap is the subject area. Technical documentation, legal texts, medicine and marketing each need different vocabulary. A translator who is excellent with literary texts may not know equipment terms.

If you need an interpreter for an event, say whether you need simultaneous interpreting with equipment or consecutive, where the interpreter speaks after the speaker. Simultaneous is usually done in pairs because it is very tiring. For written translation, the volume, the file format and any need for certification matter.

What to include in the request

  • Language pair — for example English ↔ French;
  • Type of translation — interpreting for accompaniment, consecutive, simultaneous, written;
  • Subject area — technical, legal, medical, IT;
  • Type of work — for a week, per project, permanent;
  • Pay — per hour, per page, per day;
  • City and way of working — office, travel, online;
  • Experience — years of work, a language qualification or degree.

Example: “Sydney. An English ↔ French interpreter is needed to accompany a delegation at a factory for a week. Technical subject, work in the office and on the shop floor. At least 2 years' experience, a language degree or certificate. Pay $14 an hour.”

How to search on BlaBlaPrice

Create a request on the home page in your own words. The site checks it and suggests what else to add. Translators from your area reply in the chat: they tell you about their experience and subjects and name their rates. You compare and choose, and contacts are opened only to the one you choose. The principle is described on the page “How it works”.

How to check a translator

For written translation, offer a short test passage on your subject. For interpreting, a conversation using sample terminology. Ask which fields they have already worked in, and whether they have experience at similar events.

Agree in advance on a glossary, deadlines, the form of payment and confidentiality: if the documents are commercial, put it in the contract. For interpreting, give the materials beforehand so that the interpreter can prepare for the subject.

For ongoing work, check in advance whether a non-disclosure agreement is needed and whether the translator will work on your premises.

If you are a translator looking for work

Register as a service provider on BlaBlaPrice, choose the category and your city, and offers will come in. Write about your language pairs, subjects and qualifications. Also look at vacancies for a tutor and a lecturer.

Questions and answers

How is an interpreter different from a written translator?

An interpreter works in real time and needs a quick reaction, while a written translator works with text and has more time. State in your request which type you need.

How do I judge a translator's level?

Look at the language certificate or degree and experience in your subject, and ask for a test passage. This gives a fairer picture than a CV alone.

How much do interpreters usually charge?

It depends on the language, the difficulty and the length. Just state your budget in the request, and translators will reply with their terms.

Is it free for the employer?

Yes, the service is free for the client. Service providers pay a small fee only when you choose them.
