Transmission Oils and ATF: How to Choose for Your Gearbox or Axle

Gearbox oil is chosen to suit the unit

A mistake here is expensive. A manual gearbox, an automatic, a CVT, a robotised DSG, a transfer case and a differential all have different requirements. Manual gearboxes and axles need oils of SAE 75W-90 or 80W-90 viscosity and API GL-4 or GL-5 class. Automatics use ATF fluids (Dexron VI, Mercon), and CVTs use special CVT fluids, for example NS-3. Putting anything else in an automatic or a CVT is dangerous.

GL-4 or GL-5: why “higher” is not always “better”

GL-5 has more extreme-pressure additives and is needed by hypoid axles. But in some synchromesh gearboxes these additives can harm soft alloys. So follow the manufacturer's requirements. If the manual says GL-4, fill with GL-4, even if GL-5 seems “better”.

What to put in your request

  • Type of unit — manual, automatic, CVT, DSG, transfer case, axle;
  • Car model and the gearbox code, if you know it, for example Toyota Camry 2.5, U760E;
  • Viscosity or type of fluid — 75W-90, ATF Dexron VI, CVT NS-3;
  • Specification — API GL-4/GL-5, ZF TE-ML, VW G 052 182;
  • Type of base;
  • Brand, for example Motul or Liqui Moly;
  • Quantity — for example 7 L for a change;
  • Delivery city and budget.

Example: “Toyota Camry 2.5, automatic U760E. I need fluid for a full change, 7 L, to Toyota WS specification, preferably original or Motul. Courier delivery to Perth, budget up to $100.”

How much to buy and how to count it

A partial drain in an automatic replaces only part of the volume, while a full change on a machine can need two to three times as much. So ask your mechanic which method will be used, and add a little extra. For a manual gearbox the volume is usually small, 2–3 litres. Sellers can help you work it out if you give the model and the gearbox code.

How to compare offers

Check that the specification matches what your gearbox needs, not just “universal”. Universal ATFs exist, but not for every gearbox. Compare the price per litre with delivery, and check the packaging and the manufacturing date. Ask about authenticity: fakes are especially dangerous for gearboxes. For DSG and CVT, ask whether the seller picks the fluid by gearbox code: in such units, “nearly right” does not work. It can also help to order the pan gasket and filter together, if they need changing during the service.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

You describe the car and the unit in your request, and sellers reply in the chat with offers. Each seller sees where their offer stands and can improve the terms. Your phone number stays hidden until you choose. More in How it works.

For a service, people also buy engine oils and hydraulic oils for power steering or machinery.

Questions and answers

Can I put any ATF in an automatic?

No, you need a fluid that meets the manufacturer's specification, for example Dexron VI. Universal fluids do not suit every gearbox.

How is GL-4 different from GL-5?

GL-5 has more extreme-pressure additives. But not every gearbox can take it, so follow the manufacturer's requirement.

How much fluid do I need to change an automatic?

It depends on the method of change and the gearbox model. A partial change needs less, a full change on a machine needs more. Ask your mechanic.

Does the buyer pay for BlaBlaPrice?

No, it is free for buyers. A seller pays a small fee only for the offer you choose.
