BMW parts from breakers: how to buy at a good price

Start with the VIN: on a BMW it tells almost everything

A BMW's trim is defined by dozens of options, and even two identical 5 Series E60s can have different headlights, seats and control units. So the reliable way to pick a part is the VIN. Dealers and breakers usually use the last seven characters of the VIN, from which they can see the car's configuration. Put the VIN in your request or keep it ready for the chat with a seller.

What people look for most

Lamps (xenon, adaptive headlights), body parts, interior, N52 series engines for the 5, 3 and 1 Series, gearboxes and electronic units. Each group has its own details: body parts need a colour, engines need the engine code, and units need the part number.

What to put in your request

  • Car model — with the body, for example BMW 5 E60;
  • Which part — for example, the left headlight;
  • Year — for example 2006, and whether it is a facelift;
  • Engine — size and code, for example 2.5 petrol, N52;
  • Side — front left and so on;
  • Colour — name or code, for example sapphire black;
  • Condition of the part — intact, no cracks;
  • VIN;
  • Delivery city and budget.

Example: “I need a left front headlight (xenon) for a BMW 5 E60, 2006, 2.5 petrol N52, with no cracks and intact mountings. VIN WBANA51060B123456. Courier delivery to Toronto, budget up to $410.”

Electronics and coding

Many BMW units are tied to the car: after replacement they need coding or programming. This applies to engine, comfort and suspension units. So before buying, ask the seller whether the part was taken from a car with the same trim and whether it can be adapted. And tell your technician in advance that you will fit a used unit.

Compare offers carefully

The same price can hide a different condition. Ask for photos showing the part number and the donor car, and ask about mileage, a warranty that the part works, and return terms. For engines, check whether there is a video of it running and whether it was filmed after being removed from the car. Remember that delivery of large parts costs extra.

For BMW body parts it is important to tell the packages apart: with an M kit the bumpers and side skirts are different from the base version. The same goes for headlights, with or without adaptive turning. Mention such options in your request, and the offers will not drift apart in content.

How BlaBlaPrice works

On BlaBlaPrice you do not call breakers yourself: you write a request, and sellers answer in the chat with a price, the condition and delivery. The first in the list is the best value, with reviews visible next to each. Sellers can see their position among the others and compete. Contacts stay hidden until you choose; details are in How it works.

For German competition, look at Audi breakers. All makes are in Car breakers (used parts).

Questions and answers

Why does a breaker need the VIN of my BMW?

It shows the exact trim and options. This helps pick a part that will really fit.

Does a used unit need coding after replacement?

Often yes, because the units are tied to the car. Check with the seller and the technician whether programming is needed.

How do I find out the engine code?

It is marked on the engine itself and in the car's papers. The seller can also work it out from the VIN.

Is it free for buyers?

Yes. A seller pays a small fee only when you choose their offer.
