Car detailing and polishing: how to order and compare prices
Detailing is not one single service
This word covers several different jobs, and the prices differ many times over. Polishing removes fine scratches and swirl marks from the clear coat. Ceramic or nano coating protects the body after polishing. PPF protective film guards against chips, and a vinyl wrap changes the colour. There are also headlight restoration, detailing washes and wax.
So the first question is: what do you want — to refresh an old car, prepare a new one or protect a fresh paint job.
What to put in your request
- type of work — polishing, ceramic, PPF, vinyl, headlights, wash, wax;
- make and class of the car — sedan, crossover or SUV: the size of the body affects the price;
- area to treat — the whole body, bonnet and bumper, only the headlights or the interior;
- condition of the paint — swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, or a new car;
- materials — the coating or film brand you prefer and the number of layers, if the manufacturer's warranty matters to you;
- city, timing and budget.
Example: “Toyota Innova Crysta, 2020, with fine scratches and swirl marks on the body. I need a full polish and a 2-layer ceramic coating, for example Gyeon. Toronto, within 2 days, budget up to $420. I will send photos in daylight.”
How to compare offers
The price difference mostly comes from how many hours the detailer spends and which materials they use. So look for specifics in the replies: how many polishing stages, whether the paint thickness is measured, what exactly is applied and for how long the warranty is stated. If you see only a “package” with no breakdown, ask them to spell it out.
On BlaBlaPrice you write what you need once and add one photo. Detailing studios reply in the chat with a description of the work and a price, and the site shows the best one by substance first, with reviews of the studio next to it. Each studio sees its place among the others, so it adjusts its terms to your request. Your contacts are seen only by the studio you choose.
For a new car, people often take a “polish plus protection” package before it is used, while for a car with mileage the paint thickness is checked first. It is worth asking for that measurement in any case.
What affects the price
- the size of the car and the complexity of the body shape;
- the condition of the paint: deep scratches need more passes, and thin paint limits what is possible;
- the class of materials: film, ceramic and its layers;
- preparation before application: degreasing, removing tar and marks, clay treatment;
- urgency and how many days the car stays at the studio.
Common mistakes
Most often people order ceramic on an unpolished car, and the coating locks in the defects. Another slip is to demand “remove all scratches”, although some deep ones can only be reduced without risking wearing through the clear coat. It is better to ask the studio what is realistic and to ask them to show before and after on a similar car.
If the problem goes deeper than the clear coat, you need bodywork repair, and the interior is better refreshed with a separate deep clean. Other services are in the section “Car & motorcycle servicing”. More about the service is on the page “How it works”.
