A fan for the car: which to choose for summer and long drives
Who needs such a fan
A car fan helps where there is no air conditioning or it cannot cope: in an old car, a truck, a minibus, a vehicle parked in the heat, or when passengers in the back seats feel stuffy. It does not cool the air, it only moves it, so the effect feels like a light breeze.
Voltage and power first
This is the commonest mistake. Cars have a 12 V on-board supply, trucks usually 24 V. A 12 V fan plugged into a truck's socket can fail quickly. For a truck, look for a 24 V model or one with universal 12/24 V power. There are also USB fans: they are handy if the car has a USB port, but they are usually weaker.
Mounting and design
How it is mounted decides how handy it is. A suction cup lets you turn the fan anywhere, but in the heat the cup sometimes lets go. A clip for the sun visor or the headrest suits rear passengers. Some models fix on the air vent or the dashboard. A twin fan with swivelling heads covers both driver and passenger. Check the cable length: will it reach the place you want?
Ask about noise. A quiet fan with several speeds is far more comfortable on a long road than a loud one with a single mode.

How to compare offers
Check the voltage and the cable length. Ask about the blade material and whether the blades are guarded, especially if there are children in the car. A photo or video of it running will help you judge the noise. For several pieces (for example, for every seat), ask for a price per set.
