Editing is not just “cutting out the extra”
In its simplest form, editing means cutting and joining clips. But Reels and Shorts add titles, dynamic transitions and rhythm to the music; YouTube needs structure, sound, cutaways and an intro; and ads need graphics, colour correction and text. The more of these elements, the more hours of work and the higher the price.
So in your request, describe not only “edit this” but exactly what is needed: which style, which platforms, whether you need subtitles. Add a reference if you like something.

What to put in your request
- What to edit — Reels or Shorts, a YouTube video, a wedding film, an ad, a presentation.
- Volume — how many videos, the final length and how much raw footage, for example 15 minutes from 2 hours.
- What to do — cutting, subtitles, colour correction, motion graphics, sound, effects.
- Source material — whether it is ready, what it was shot on, in which format, and whether you need stock footage.
- Format — vertical 9:16 or horizontal.
- One-off or regular — for example, 20 clips a month.
- Delivery date and budget.

How to compare editors
The price is often quoted per minute of finished video, per clip or per hour of work. To compare, convert everything to one unit. Ask about the number of revisions: sometimes they are limited, and each extra one is paid. Find out who sources the music and stock material and whether it is licensed for your platform.
Look at examples in the same genre you need. A Reels editor and an editor of long interviews are almost different professions. For regular work, agree on a trial task and a shared routine: how you send files, how soon you get the first version and where you collect comments.
Common mistakes
Sending material without explaining which parts matter most. Not stating the format and platform, then asking for a vertical clip to be redone as horizontal. Not agreeing on revisions. Sending files so heavily compressed that colour correction becomes pointless.
