Welding equipment: how to choose a machine and not overpay
The welding method decides the machine
The most common choice for home and garage is an inverter for manual arc welding (MMA) with electrodes. It is compact and suits metal frames, gates, grilles and repairs. A MIG/MAG machine uses wire, is faster and gives a neater seam on thin metal, including car bodywork, but needs shielding gas or flux-cored wire. TIG (argon) welding is for stainless steel and aluminium, and a plasma cutter is for cutting.
Choose by the material and the thickness of the metal: they tell you how much current you need.
What to put in your request
- welding type — MMA, MIG/MAG, TIG, plasma cutter, spot welding;
- welding current — the maximum in amps, or the electrode or wire diameter;
- what it is for — home, garage, workshop, production, and whether you need a high duty cycle;
- power supply — single phase or three phase, and whether the machine will run from a generator;
- make or model — if you have a preference;
- kit — cables, mask, torch, regulator, wire feeder, trolley;
- new or used, warranty, delivery city and budget.
Example: “I need a new 250 A MMA inverter for my garage, single phase, with cables and a mask. 2-year warranty preferred. Courier delivery to Calgary, budget up to $250.”
What duty cycle and current mean
Duty cycle shows how many minutes out of ten the machine can work at its maximum current. For jobs at home a low duty cycle is enough. A workshop or factory needs a higher one, otherwise the machine overheats and shuts off. So say in your request how heavily you will use it.
Another trap is “250 A” on the box. Ask at what duty cycle and at what mains voltage the machine gives that figure. If the voltage in your area drops, or you run the machine from a generator, ask the seller whether the model supports it. For 3 mm electrodes about 100–130 A is usually enough, so not everyone needs a huge reserve of power.
How to compare offers
The same model name from different sellers can mean a different kit: one has short, thin cables, another longer and thicker ones, with an auto-darkening mask or without. Look at the cable thickness and length, the type of mask and whether a case is included. For a MIG machine, check whether the regulator and torch are in the price and what size of wire spool the feeder takes.
Be careful with used machines: check the cables, connectors and fan, and ask for a video of it working.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You describe the job once, and welding equipment sellers send offers in the chat with price, kit and warranty. It is free for buyers. Sellers see their place among the others and compete for your request. BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, and seller reviews are visible next to it. Contacts stay hidden until you choose a seller. Create a request or read how it works.
To prepare the metal you will need angle grinder accessories, and nearby are power tools.
