Fur earmuffs and headbands: how to choose and buy
Earmuffs, a headband or a headband-cap
Fur earmuffs are two fluffy “pads” on a band worn at the back of the head or under the chin. They keep the ears warm and do not spoil your hairstyle, but they do not cover the crown. A headband can be knitted, fleece, a sports one that wicks moisture, or a narrow fashion one. For winter running or skiing, a fleece headband is handy; for the city, a knitted one with a fold.
Decide what matters more: warmth or hair. Earmuffs hardly flatten your hair, while a headband fits more snugly and does not fly off in the wind.
Fur: natural or faux
Natural fur (rabbit, sheep, fox) is warmer and lasts longer, but costs more and needs careful handling: keep it dry and dry it away from a heater. Faux fur is easier to care for and to clean, but can mat and warms less in hard cold. If you are buying for ethical reasons or because of an allergy, say so plainly in your request. Every seller should state what the earmuffs are made of and not hide whether the fur is natural.
For a child, look for a fluffy but non-shedding pile that will not get into the mouth, and a soft band without hard plastic that presses on the temples.
What to put in your request
- type — fur earmuffs, knitted, fleece or sports headband;
- use — city, sport, skiing, school;
- material — natural or faux fur, fleece, wool;
- for whom — woman, man, child with age;
- size — head circumference in cm, band adjustment;
- colour — white, black, beige, pink;
- condition — new;
- quantity and budget, if you want to name it.
Example: “I'm looking for new fur earmuffs for a 6-year-old girl, white, faux fur, on an adjustable band, head circumference 54 cm. For walks and sports. Delivery to Kowloon. Budget up to HK$55.”
How to compare offers
Ask for real photos and a close-up of the pile. Ask whether the fur is sewn on firmly and does not shed, what the composition says, and whether the band adjusts. The same price often hides a different pile and stitching quality. If it is a gift, agree on the packaging.
One more point is the season. In winter popular colours sell out, so write your request ahead of time and not on the eve of the cold spell.
