How to find a milling machine operator: metal or wood, manual or CNC

First decide the machine and the material

A milling machine operator works on universal milling machines, on CNC machining centres, or on routers for wood and MDF. Metal, stainless steel, aluminium and plastic need different tools and cutting settings, so “milling operator” without details says nothing. Write what exactly the person will work on and with what.

Accuracy, parts and independence

An operator may make one-off parts from drawings, batch runs, repair jobs or precision work with tight tolerances. These are different levels of responsibility. Ask how the candidate mounts a part, picks a cutter, sets the zero and measures the result, and whether they work without a supervisor. A grade or certificate hints at the level, but examples of finished parts and drawings show it more precisely.

Also say who prepares the tooling: is there a set of cutters, vices and fixtures, and who sharpens cutters or changes inserts? This affects the speed of work and the operator's responsibility.

What to put in the job post

  • Machine type — manual, CNC machining centre, wood router;
  • Material — steel, aluminium, stainless steel, MDF, plastic;
  • Skill level — trade certificate or diploma, tolerances, certificates;
  • Which parts — one-off from drawings or batch;
  • Experience — how many years;
  • Pay and pay system — monthly salary, hourly, piece rate;
  • City and area and hours — for example a six-day week.

Example: “Milling machine operator needed in Kowloon for a manual milling machine. Metal, one-off parts from drawings, formally qualified, 3+ years of experience. Six-day week, from HK$2,600 a month plus piece rate, on the payroll.”

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

You post one job request and you don't have to answer dozens of calls. It is checked for ads and stray contact details, and you get hints on what is missing. Candidates from your area answer in chat: machines, materials, skill level, joining date, expected pay. Reviews help you compare. The number stays hidden until you choose someone. More about this on how it works.

What to consider in pay and checks

With piece-rate pay, write down the rates and what happens if a part is rejected. The best way to assess a candidate is a trial part and a talk about tolerances. For CNC work, also look at a design engineer, who prepares the drawings, or a lathe operator for related machining. Other workshop trades are in the manufacturing section.

Questions and answers

How is a manual milling operator different from a CNC operator?

The manual operator guides the machine by hand and knows cutting well, while a CNC operator works from a program. Say in the post which machine is in your workshop.

Which pay system should I state?

The one you really pay by: monthly salary, hourly or piece rate. For piece rate, write the rates so the candidate can estimate the earnings.

How can I check skills quickly?

Offer a trial part from a drawing and measure the result. It shows accuracy and independence better than a conversation.

Will all candidates see my number?

No, contacts are hidden. You pass them only to the candidate you choose.
