How to buy men's outerwear at a good price: jackets, parkas, coats

First decide the season and the temperature

The most common mistake in buying men's outerwear is taking “just a warm jacket”. A winter parka for sub-zero mountain weather and a light bomber for the in-between season are different things in cut, insulation and price. So first decide the conditions you will wear it in: daily rides around the city, a long road trip, or long walks outdoors.

For real cold, people usually take down or modern synthetic insulation, and for the in-between season, thin polyfill or softshell. If there is rain and wind, the outer layer should be a membrane or a dense windproof fabric.

What to put in your request

The more precisely you describe it, the less sellers have to ask, and the offers will be comparable:

  • type: puffer jacket, parka, coat, windcheater, bomber, leather jacket or gilet;
  • season: winter, in-between or summer, and down to what temperature;
  • insulation and outer fabric: natural down, synthetic, membrane;
  • size: letter (S–3XL) or chest size in inches, and if needed your height and chest;
  • length: to the waist, mid-thigh or to the knee;
  • brand, if you have a favourite, or “any”;
  • colour and condition: new or second-hand, and what signs of wear are acceptable;
  • delivery city and budget, if you want to state it.

Example: “I need a new men's parka for winter in Tuen Mun, down to −5 °C, mid-thigh length, natural down or good synthetic insulation, hood with removable fur. Size XL (height 184 cm), dark green or black. Delivery by courier. Budget up to HK$940.”

How the search works through BlaBlaPrice

You do not go round shops and marketplaces. You create one request once. It is checked, you are prompted about missing details, and it goes to clothing sellers. They reply in the chat: what exactly they offer, the price, sizes in stock, delivery and photos. Sellers can see where their offer stands, so they often sharpen their terms. Your phone stays hidden until you choose a seller.

How to compare offers

  • The insulation composition: “down 90/10” and “down-like insulation” are not the same; ask for the label or a photo of the composition.
  • Real measurements: for a jacket, look at the sleeve length and shoulder width, not just the letter.
  • For a puffer: whether it is protected against down leaking out and how the seams are finished.
  • For second-hand: the state of the lining, zip, cuffs and collar, and whether the insulation has lost volume.
  • The return terms if the size does not fit.

When to buy and what to avoid

Winter clothes are often cheaper toward the end of the season, and in-between wear after the season ends. But even in season sellers compete with each other, so it is worth just asking. Do not buy “from a photo” without measurements in centimetres, and do not ignore the length: a knee-length parka and a waist-length jacket keep you warm quite differently.

Under outerwear you may need a sweater or sweatshirt, and a classic coat goes with a suit or blazer. See how it all works on the “How it works” page.

Questions and answers

How do I choose outerwear size so it is not too small?

Measure your chest, shoulders and sleeve length and compare them with the seller's size chart. For a winter jacket, leave room for a sweater underneath.

Which is warmer: down or synthetic?

Good natural down is usually lighter and warm for the same weight, while synthetic copes better with damp and is easier to care for. In the end it depends on the particular model.

Is it safe to buy a second-hand jacket from a private seller?

Ask for detailed photos of the lining, seams and zip and for measurements, and it is better to pay after inspecting the jacket, or on delivery.

Does the buyer pay for BlaBlaPrice?

No, it is free for buyers. The seller pays a small fee only when you choose their offer.
