How to hire a site foreman for construction or renovation
What to expect from a site foreman
A site foreman is the person responsible for making sure the work on site goes to the plan, on time and to the right quality. They distribute tasks among crews, order and receive materials, keep records of completed work and sign off measurements. A good foreman saves money where it isn't obvious at once: fewer redos, less idle time, fewer unnecessary purchases.
What to include in the vacancy
- Duties — managing crews, accepting work, tracking materials, schedules, documentation.
- Type of construction — residential complex, private houses, commercial sites, roads.
- Salary — the rate and, if there is one, a bonus for meeting deadlines.
- Work location — city, one site or travelling between several.
- Schedule — for example, five or six days a week, or flexible hours, because sites have rush days.
- Employment terms — on payroll, as a sole proprietor or contractor, per project.
- Experience — how many years specifically as a site foreman.
- Education — usually a building or civil engineering qualification.
Example request
“A construction company in Central is looking for a site foreman for a residential complex. Managing three crews, accepting work, controlling the schedule and materials, measurement sheets. At least 5 years as a foreman, a degree or diploma in civil engineering. Six days a week, salary from HK$5,100 a month, on the company payroll.”
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You describe the vacancy once. The request is checked for ads and contact details, and you are prompted on which details candidates are missing. Then foremen in your area reply in the chat: they tell you about the sites they worked on and what they expect. BlaBlaPrice shows the strongest replies first, judged by content, with the candidate's reviews next to each. Contacts are hidden and opened only to the one you choose. You pay nothing for the search. More on the page “How it works”.
How to assess a candidate
Ask separately how the person works with a schedule: do they keep weekly plans, how do they react when a supply is late and can they tell the client about a problem in time, not after the deadline has already slipped.
Ask about the biggest site the candidate has run, how many people reported to them and what went wrong. An honest answer about mistakes is worth more than a perfect story. Ask them to describe how they accept work, for example plastering or a concrete frame: what measurements they take, what they look at first. Agree at once whether the foreman has the right to hire and dismiss crews or only to coordinate them.
For the work itself you will need construction workers, and for finishing a plasterer or a painter.
