School subject tutor: how to find and compare
Why you need a tutor: catching up or preparing
The goal decides who you should look for. Lifting marks from 60–70% to a steady 90% is one task. Preparing for an entrance exam or an olympiad is quite another. In the first case the main thing is to explain the missed topic and bring back confidence. In the second you need a systematic programme and practice with tests.
A Class 9 student who finds algebra hard often has to close gaps from earlier years first. So describe in your request where exactly the difficulties are.
How searching on BlaBlaPrice works
Instead of scrolling through ads and messaging each tutor, you create one request: subject, class, goal, format. Before tutors see it, it is checked and you are told what is missing. Tutors reply in the chat: experience, price per lesson, free slots, and whether a trial lesson is possible. They can see where their offer ranks, so they often improve their terms. Reviews are shown next to each one. Your phone number stays hidden until you choose a tutor. Read more on the “How it works” page.
What to put in your request
- Subject — maths, physics, chemistry, English, a second language and so on.
- Class or the learner's age.
- Goal — catching up, entrance exam, final exam, olympiad, speaking practice.
- Level of knowledge — current marks, where the difficulties are.
- Format — online or in person, one-to-one or in a group.
- How often — for example, 2 times a week for 60 minutes.
- Requirements for the tutor — a school teacher, a college lecturer, students' results.
- Area for in-person lessons and budget per lesson.
Example: “Tuen Mun. Class 9, I need physics: marks around 60–70%, trouble with mechanics. I want to catch up by the end of the term. In person or online, 2 times a week for 60 minutes. Budget up to HK$47 per lesson.”
How to choose from the offers
- Level check. A good tutor starts by checking the level and works out what exactly is not working.
- Plan and feedback. Whether they tell the parents about progress and homework.
- Experience with your goal. For entrance exams, this means students' results. For the school syllabus, it means being able to explain simply.
- Terms. Length of a lesson, payment per lesson or per package, and the rescheduling rule.
Suggest a trial lesson: in 30–40 minutes you can see whether the child understands the explanations and is not afraid to ask again. Be careful with anyone who promises to quickly “raise the score” in a few lessons without a level check.
Common mistakes
Looking for a tutor only by the lowest price. Taking several subjects at once when the child is tired. Not asking what the child will do between lessons: without practice at home, progress is weak.
For specific areas there are separate pages: national exam preparation and foreign language teachers. Look for other learning in the “Education and sports services” section.
