Ventilation for a house or flat: how to buy equipment at a good price

First define the task

The word “ventilation” hides very different things. An exhaust fan for the bathroom, an inline fan for the kitchen, a heat recovery unit for a whole house, an air conditioner for a bedroom, a set of ducts and grilles. A seller cannot choose correctly until they know what you want to solve: damp in the bathroom, cooking smells, fresh air without draughts, or coolness in summer.

Which parameters really matter

  • Airflow — measured in m³/h. For household rooms it is usually worked out from the volume of the room and the air changes needed.
  • Diameter — fans and ducts come in, for example, 100, 125 and 150 mm. They must match each other.
  • Noise level — especially for a bedroom and for inline models.
  • For an air conditioner — the capacity in BTU or kW is chosen for the area and heat gains, and an inverter compressor is quieter and cheaper to run.

A heat recovery unit returns part of the heat (or coolness) from the outgoing air to the incoming air, so it cuts losses, which is useful in air-conditioned homes. It is useful for houses with sealed windows, but needs a design: ducts, space for the unit, condensate drainage.

What to put in your request

  • Type of equipment — exhaust fan, inline fan, heat recovery unit, air conditioner, grilles, dampers.
  • Area or volume — for example a 750 sq ft flat or an 18 sq m room.
  • Specifications — m³/h, diameter in mm, cooling capacity.
  • Model or brand — if you have already chosen.
  • Quantity — how many fans, metres of duct, grilles.
  • Fitting — measuring, installation, connection needed.
  • Condition — new or acceptable used.
  • Delivery city and budget.

Example: “I need a quiet inline fan for a 125 mm duct, about 300 m³/h, for the kitchen of an independent house. Also 6 m of flexible 125 mm duct and two grilles. No fitting needed. Delivery to Central, budget up to HK$750.”

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

Instead of searching shop by shop, you describe the task once in a request. It is checked, and you see hints about what sellers still lack. Then sellers of ventilation equipment answer in the chat: what they offer, the price, whether it is in stock, how delivery works. They see which place their offer takes, and so they often improve the terms. BlaBlaPrice shows the best offer first, and the seller's reviews are next to it. Your contacts are hidden until you pass them on yourself. More in how it works.

What to look at when comparing

Check the diameters and airflow, not just the price and brand. Ask whether a non-return valve, a timer or a humidity sensor is in the set, because they are often sold separately. For an air conditioner, find out what fitting includes: a run of a few metres, brackets, pipes. Anything beyond the standard run is usually charged separately.

If the system is linked to the heat in the house, also see heating, and for powering fans and controls you will need electrical supplies.

Questions and answers

How is a heat recovery unit different from an ordinary extractor?

An extractor only throws air outside, while a heat recovery unit also brings in fresh air and passes it part of the heat from the outgoing air. It is harder to install and costs more.

How do I choose the capacity of an air conditioner?

People go by the area and ceiling height, the direction the room faces, and the number of people and appliances. In your request write the area and details of the room, and the seller will suggest a model.

Can I buy only ducts and grilles?

Yes. Give the diameter, length, type (flexible or rigid) and number of grilles, so that the offers can be compared.

Does the buyer pay for offers?

No, BlaBlaPrice is free for buyers. A seller pays a small fee only when you choose them.
