A catamaran for rafting or leisure: how to choose and buy
First, what is the catamaran for
A catamaran is two floats joined by a frame, so it is stable and carries a lot. For river trips people take inflatable touring catamarans made of PVC or rubberised fabric: they fold into a rucksack. For beaches and lakes, pedal catamarans with plastic floats are popular. Sailing and motor models are a separate, usually dearer category. The purpose decides the size, the material and the price.
How it works through BlaBlaPrice
You create one request and describe the catamaran you are looking for. It is checked, and you are told what sellers still need to know. Outdoor equipment shops and private owners reply: what they offer, price, kit, photos, delivery. Sellers see where their offer ranks, so they compete for your choice. Contacts stay hidden. Details are on the “How it works” page.
What to put in your request
- Type of catamaran — inflatable touring for rafting, pedal, sailing or motor.
- Number of seats — for two, for four or more.
- Material — PVC, rubberised fabric, plastic or aluminium.
- Condition — new or used.
- Model, if you have already chosen.
- Kit — frame, floor, paddles, sail, motor mount, pump, repair kit.
- City and delivery, and a budget if you want to state it.
Example: “I need an inflatable catamaran for rafting for 4 people, PVC, with frame, floor and pump, no patches on the floats. Used, in good condition. Kuala Lumpur, courier delivery. Budget up to RM 2,200.”
How to inspect and compare offers
On an inflatable catamaran the glued seams and the valves matter most. Ask for photos of the seams, valves and floor, and after inflating, leave it for a day to see whether the air leaks slowly. Check for scuffs from rocks and old patches in several layers. For the frame, ask about the material and whether all the fittings are there: without them the structure loses rigidity. On a pedal catamaran check that the pedals work, the chain, the steering and that the floats have no cracks.
When you compare offers, consider the completeness of the kit. Sometimes a cheaper catamaran without a frame, floor or pump ends up dearer after you buy the missing parts. Ask about load capacity too: for a trip with a tent and gear you need a reserve.
Transport and what the price depends on
The weight of the folded catamaran and the size of the pack matter too if you travel by public transport. Ask at once whether two people can assemble it and how long that takes.
The price depends on the float material and the thickness of the PVC, the type of frame, the number of seats, the brand and the kit. A used catamaran is cheaper but needs careful checking of the seams and valves, so do not hesitate to ask for extra photos and a video of it inflated.
Common mistakes
Taking a two-seater when a trip needs room for gear. Buying used without checking that it holds air. Forgetting the pump, paddles and life jackets. Underestimating how hard assembly is: some models need experience. If you want a simpler solution, look also at kayaks or inflatable PVC boats. An overview of all the water options is in the “Boats and watercraft” section.
