Renting land: how to find a plot or a field for your purpose

The purpose of the rent decides everything

People rent land for different things: farming, a warehouse, a farm, a resort or building. The purpose sets both the requirements for the land and the term. To grow crops you need fertile soil and crop rotation over several years, so the lease is taken for a long term. For a temporary warehouse or yard, access, level ground and electricity matter more.

First work out how much land you really need: for a field, one continuous block matters, and small scattered plots make cultivation and machinery logistics harder. Also look at the permitted use of the land. Not every plot recorded as agricultural can be used for a warehouse or business. Check the permitted use in the documents before you sign.

What to put in your request

  • location — state, district or village;
  • purpose — farming, building, warehouse, farm, leisure;
  • size — in acres or sq ft;
  • lease term in years;
  • rent — per acre per year, or per month in another form;
  • services — electricity, water, access road;
  • soil — type, slope;
  • documents — survey number, registered lease.

Example: “I am looking to lease 50 acres of farmland for 7 years near Kuala Lumpur, black soil, in one block, with a survey number. Rent up to RM 1,400 per acre per year, and I need an access road.”

How to search with BlaBlaPrice

You create a request, and landowners and agents from your region reply in the chat: size, price, term, survey number, photos or a map. You do not need to visit village offices and call numbers from notice boards. Sellers see where their offer stands and can improve the terms. You pass contacts only to the one you choose.

What to compare and check

  • The rent per acre per year and what it covers: who pays the taxes, and whether the rent rises over the years.
  • Survey number, boundaries and ownership records: look them up in the public records.
  • Whether the land is tied up in another lease or mortgage.
  • Physical condition: slope, waterlogging, debris, weeds, what was grown before.
  • Terms for ending the agreement and returning the land.

Give the agreement to a lawyer to read before you sign it.

Common mistakes

Signing an agreement without seeing the land. Judging the rent by price alone, without the soil quality and the roads. Not stating in the agreement how the rent is paid (money or a share of the crop). Agreeing verbally.

If you are considering buying, see land for sale, building plots or farmland and agricultural plots. How the service works is explained on the “How it works” page.

Questions and answers

For how long should I lease farmland?

To grow crops people usually take several years, so the preparation costs pay off. The exact term is agreed with the owner and written in the agreement.

Is land rented for money or for a share of the crop?

Both happen. State in the request which format suits you and the matching owners will reply.

What is a survey number and why do I need it?

It is the number that identifies a piece of land in the records. With it you can check the boundaries, the permitted use and the owner.

Can everyone see my phone number?

No, your phone is hidden. Only the one you choose gets your contacts.
