Gear for a season, not for years
A tent for one trek, a SUP board for a holiday, a kayak for a weekend: buying such gear for a few trips is expensive, and storing it is awkward. Hiring lets you try different things, find out what really suits you, and not overspend. It is also handy when you need several sets at once for a group.
Before you write the request, decide the scenario: where, for how many days, and in what weather. This decides how warm the sleeping bag must be, which tent you need, and what kind of water or terrain awaits you.
What to put in your request
- what to hire — tent, sleeping bag, skis, snowboard, SUP board, kayak, skates;
- specifications — tent capacity, length of the board or kayak;
- size — height, shoe or clothing size, skill level;
- quantity — for example, 2 sets;
- period — 3 days from 5 June; allow for the journey;
- delivery to your place or pick-up;
- deposit, city and budget per day.
Example: “I need a 4-person tent and two sleeping bags for 3 days from 5 June, Kuala Lumpur. Preferably with delivery. Budget up to RM 82 per day.”
How to compare offers
For a tent, ask about the temperature rating and waterproofing, and whether the frame, pegs and carry bag are included. For a sleeping bag, ask for the comfort temperature, not only the extreme one. For a SUP board or kayak, check the set: pump, paddle, life jacket, repair kit.
Look at the condition of the gear and the return rules: must you dry the tent, who washes the kayak. Also find out how the day is counted: calendar day or 24 hours.
For water gear, ask about the weight limit: an inflatable SUP board is built for a certain weight, and with a child or a dog it may sag. For a kayak it is important to know the number of seats, the maximum load, and whether waterproof bags are included. For skates and skis, the main thing is the right boot size.
Common mistakes
- Not checking the set: a tent may lack pegs or a fly sheet.
- Taking a sleeping bag without thinking of the night temperature.
- Not thinking of weight and size: the set must fit in your car.
- Not inspecting the items on receipt and not noting their condition.
