Trucks: how to buy a tractor unit, tipper or lorry at a good price
The type of truck matters more than the make
A truck is bought for a specific job, not for a brand. A tractor unit with a semi-trailer works on long-distance haulage, a tipper on construction sites and in quarries, a refrigerated truck is needed for food and medicines, and a curtain-sider or flatbed body is handy for pallets and long loads. If you get the type wrong, no discount will save you: the truck does not earn, it stands.

What to put in your request
- Type of truck — tractor unit, tipper, curtain-sider, refrigerated, flatbed, truck-mounted crane.
- Model — for example DAF XF 480, MAN TGX, Volvo FH, Scania R.
- Year — exact or “not older than 2015”.
- Load capacity — in tonnes, and for a tractor unit the permitted gross weight of the combination.
- Kilometres driven — the maximum.
- Engine — power in hp and the emission standard.
- Gearbox — manual or automated.
- Technical condition — no repairs needed, after repair or for restoration.
- City and budget, if you want to state them.
Example: “I need a tractor unit, DAF XF 460 or Volvo FH, not older than 2015, up to 800,000 km, the latest emission standard if possible, automatic gearbox, sleeper cab, no repairs needed. Ipoh, inspection at a garage. Budget up to RM 170,000.”
What to check before buying
Kilometres on trucks can be understated, so match them against the service history, the wear on the pedals, steering wheel and seat. Ask for engine and gearbox diagnostics, an inspection of the frame for cracks and repair welds, and the condition of the tyres, brakes, fifth wheel and air suspension. For a refrigerated truck, separately check that the cooling unit works and how many hours it has run. For a tipper, check the body hydraulics and the condition of the sides.
Ask about the papers: whose name it is registered in, and whether there are any loans or restrictions on it. Compare offers on the same equipment: the price gap between two similar tractor units often means different cabs, a retarder, air conditioning or a parking heater.
Common mistakes
Agreeing to buy from photos, with no garage inspection. Looking only at the price and not counting that you will have to replace tyres, batteries or belts. Not asking what exactly is in the price: the semi-trailer, seals, the set of papers. Buying a vehicle that does not suit your route because of its emission standard.
If your loads are small, consider light trucks and vans up to 3.5 t. For carrying people you need buses, and for construction work heavy equipment.
