How to find a nanny, caregiver or cleaner for your home or office

Trust matters more than speed

Domestic staff come into your home or look after someone close to you, so it is not enough to find just anyone: you need to choose the right person. Start with a clear idea of what you need: help with a child, care for an elderly person, regular cleaning or sweeping around the building.

After that, decide the rhythm: every day, a few times a week or once, by day, at night or live-in.

Who does what

  • A nanny looks after a child, feeds, takes walks and sometimes helps with homework or development.
  • A caregiver helps an elderly or sick person: meals, hygiene, medicines as prescribed by a doctor.
  • A cleaner cleans a flat, an office or a staircase on a schedule.
  • A housekeeper runs the household: cleaning, laundry, ironing, sometimes cooking.
  • A sweeper keeps the grounds tidy, clears fallen leaves and rubbish.

What to put in the vacancy

  • Who needs care — the child’s age, the elderly person’s condition, special points: allergies, diet, limited mobility.
  • Schedule — days, hours, evenings, weekends, live-in or not.
  • Place — city, area, floor, whether there is a lift, whether there are pets at home.
  • Duties — what the job includes and what it does not.
  • Experience — references, education, medical training for care.
  • Pay — per hour, shift or month, weekly or at the end of the month.
  • Start — when you need to begin and whether a trial session is needed.

Example: “Need a nanny for a 3-year-old girl in Auckland, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00. Walks, lunches, educational games, at least 2 years of experience and references. Paid monthly, start from the 14th.”

If you need a live-in person, write about the conditions: a separate room, meals, days off and cover. Candidates look for these details first, and without them they simply do not reply.

How searching on BlaBlaPrice works

You write one request, and candidates reply in the chat with an account of their experience, schedule and expected pay. The request is checked before it is shown, and your number is hidden: only the person you choose will see it. You do not have to search through groups and leave your phone number in the open. More on the “How it works” page.

How to check a person before they start

Ask the candidate to tell you about previous families and to give the contact of someone who can give a reference. Arrange a short meeting in the presence of the child or the elderly person and see how they get on. For care of bedridden people, ask about experience of such care, and for babies about experience with infants specifically. In the first days stay nearby or find out how the day went. All agreements about duties and pay are best put in writing. For medical matters, follow the doctor’s prescriptions, not the advice of nannies.

Think separately about the limits of duties. A nanny does not necessarily clean the whole flat, and a caregiver does not always cook for the whole family. When the job is clearly described, there are fewer conflicts and the sides agree on pay faster. Also agree on a replacement during illness or leave, and how you will tell each other about changes in the schedule. Small things written down in advance save a lot of nerves later.

Questions and answers

What should I include to find a good nanny?

The child’s age, schedule, area and duties. Add requirements for experience and references, and replies will be more accurate.

How does a caregiver differ from a housekeeper?

A caregiver looks after a person: meals, hygiene, help at home. A housekeeper runs the household: cleaning, laundry and cooking.

Can I find a cleaner for a one-time clean?

Yes, in the request say it is a one-off job, and give the area, the type of premises and the date you want.

Who sees my phone number?

Only the candidate you choose. Other candidates see just your request, without contacts.
