Radiator, Water Pump and Thermostat for Motorcycles: How to Buy

When a motorcycle overheats

A liquid-cooling system on a motorcycle consists of a radiator, hoses, a water pump, a thermostat, a fan, a radiator cap and a temperature sensor. Signs of trouble: the temperature needle rises fast, the fan switches on too often or does not switch on, coolant drips from under the engine. Before you buy, work out what exactly has failed. Sometimes the cause is simple: a worn radiator cap that does not hold pressure. In summer traffic a weak cooling system shows up quickly.

A radiator after a fall

The radiator suffers most from stones and falls. Light damage to the fins can sometimes be straightened, but punctured tubes are better soldered, or the radiator replaced. A new part is expensive, so people often take a used one from a breaker or an aftermarket one. For older sport models, such as the Honda CBR 954RR, you can find a radiator by its part number: for example, 19010-MCJ-003. With it the seller sees exactly your version.

What to put in your request

  • which part — radiator, fan, pump, thermostat, hoses, cap, temperature sensor;
  • bike model and year — for example Honda CBR 954RR, 2003;
  • engine — capacity, for example 954 cc;
  • part number — from the part or the catalogue;
  • original or aftermarket;
  • condition — new or used in working order;
  • delivery city and budget.

Example: “I need a radiator for a Honda CBR 954RR, 2003, part number 19010-MCJ-003. New, or used with no leaks and no dents in the fins. Delivery to Hamilton, budget up to $110.”

How to compare offers

  • For a used radiator: whether it was pressure-tested, whether there are signs of repair, whether the tubes are clean inside.
  • Whether the mounts, hoses and sensor are included.
  • For a pump: whether the shaft and the seal are intact, and there is no play on the impeller.
  • For a thermostat: the opening temperature must match the original.

A typical mistake is to buy a radiator without checking compatibility with the year: the hoses differ between generations of the same bike. The second mistake is to fill the new system with the wrong coolant; ask the seller or a mechanic which one suits your engine, and change the fluid together with the part.

Questions and answers

Can I repair a radiator instead of replacing it?

Small leaks are sometimes soldered, but a badly damaged radiator is better replaced. A mechanic will make the final call.

How do I know the water pump is faulty?

Overheating, a leak from under the pump, noise or play in the shaft. It is better to leave the diagnosis to a mechanic.

Will a radiator from another year fit?

Not always: hoses and mounts can differ. Give the year and the part number.

Does the buyer pay for searching on BlaBlaPrice?

No, it is free for buyers.
