Engine Oil for Your Car: How to Choose and Buy at a Good Price

The carmaker's approval matters more than the brand

Many people choose oil by brand and price, but the right place to start is the car's manual. It gives the viscosity (for example 5W-30) and the carmaker's approval: VW 504.00, MB 229.5, dexos2, Ford WSS or ACEA C3. Oil without the right approval may work worse, and engines with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) need low SAPS oil.

How to read the label

  • 5W-30 — the first number shows how the oil behaves when cold (lower means thinner), the second is the viscosity at operating temperature.
  • ACEA — European classes: A/B for petrol and diesel, C for cars with particulate filters.
  • API — the American standard, for example SN.
  • Base — synthetic, semi-synthetic, mineral; modern engines usually need synthetic.

What to put in your request

  • Viscosity — 5W-30, 5W-40, 0W-20;
  • Car model with the engine, for example Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI, and the year;
  • Carmaker's approval, if you know it;
  • Type of base;
  • Brand, for example Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge;
  • Quantity — litres, a 5 L can or a drum;
  • Delivery city and budget.

Example: “Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI, 2014. I need synthetic 5W-40 oil with VW 502.00/505.00 approval (or an ACEA equivalent), a 5 L can, Mobil 1 or Castrol. Courier delivery to Hamilton, budget up to $76.”

Genuine oil and fakes

Engine oils are among the most counterfeited products. Buy from sellers with reviews, and check that the pack is sealed, has a batch code and clear printing. Ask about the manufacturing date: fresh oil from a big warehouse is safer than an old batch. In requests for a workshop or fleet, you can ask straight away for a drum or several cans: the price per litre will be better.

How to compare offers

Compare the price per litre, including delivery. Make sure the viscosity and approval match in every offer; cheaper oil without the approval you need does not save money, it puts the engine at risk. Brand is the second criterion: well-known makes usually carry certificates, but less famous certified options can be perfectly fine too. Also ask whether a filter comes with it if you are buying both for a service.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

One request is enough: oil sellers reply in the chat with brand, quantity, price and delivery. Each seller sees where they stand among the offers and can improve the terms. Your phone number stays hidden, and only the seller you choose gets it. Details are on the How it works page.

When changing oil, people often also buy transmission oils and antifreeze and technical fluids.

Questions and answers

How do I find out which oil my car needs?

Check the owner's manual or service book: it gives the viscosity and approval. If you cannot find it, write the make, model and engine in your request.

Can I use oil with a different approval?

It is better to follow the carmaker's requirements, especially for modern engines. If in doubt, ask the seller or your mechanic.

Which base is better: synthetic or semi-synthetic?

Modern engines usually call for synthetic. For older cars, semi-synthetic is fine if it meets the approval.

Is a 5-litre can good value?

Usually a litre from a can costs less than from small bottles. Buy the volume you need for the change, with a little spare.
