How to find a student or fresher for a first job or internship
Who is hired in this category
This is for vacancies that do not require experience: an internship in an office or an IT company, a part-time job for students, an assistant for a department, a junior specialist. Such candidates value a flexible schedule, training and a clear prospect, so show that right in the ad.
You do not need to talk about yourself at length. It is enough to describe honestly what you will teach and what you expect, and the candidate’s reply will show the rest.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You, the employer, write one request in your own words, for example “Looking for an intern for the sales team”. You do not need to choose a category, the site works it out. Before it is shown, the request is checked: no advertising, nonsense or contacts in the text, and you are told which details candidates lack.
Then interested people from your region reply: they write briefly about themselves, say when they can start and name the pay they expect. Your phone is hidden, and only the person you choose gets your contacts. More on the “How it works” page. The request stays active for 7 days and can be extended.
What to put in the vacancy
- Position — intern, assistant, junior manager.
- Pay — a sum, an hourly rate or “paid internship”; students usually look at this first.
- Place of work — city, area or remote.
- Schedule — after classes, four hours a day, two shifts a week.
- Requirements — year of study, knowledge of software, language.
- Type of employment — a three-month internship, part-time or full-time, formal or not.
- Training — whether there is a mentor and who will introduce the person to the work.
Example: “Need an intern for the marketing department, Auckland, students in the 3rd or 4th year. Flexible schedule, 4 hours a day after classes, paid internship for 3 months, a mentor is provided. No experience needed, basic Excel and English are enough.”
How to assess the replies
Do not expect a five-year portfolio from a student with no experience. Look at motivation, part-time jobs, volunteering and university projects. Ask the person to write what interests them and how many hours a week they are really free, since a class timetable changes every semester.
Offer a small test task of an hour or two and see how the person listens and asks questions. Discuss separately what happens after the internship: whether there is a chance of a permanent post or not. Dishonest promises put off the very people who will then tell their classmates.
Common employer mistakes
Requiring “two years of experience” in a vacancy for students. Not naming the pay and then wondering why there are few replies. Setting a 5/2 schedule of eight hours for a person who studies during the day. If you need a different format, look at vacancies in call centres or in retail.
