How to find a florist for a flower shop or for festive seasons
A florist is more than a flower seller
Beautiful bouquets are made by someone with a sense of composition and colour, who knows how long different flowers last and how to treat and store them. A florist also talks to the customer, picks a gift to fit the budget, manages stock and writes off wilted items. Weak work shows at once: the bouquet falls apart and wilts fast.
So in the job post say straight away what you expect: making bouquets, gift arrangements, working on weddings and events, or only selling ready-made items.
How to search through BlaBlaPrice
You write one job request in your own words, and candidates answer in chat: they send their experience, links to their work, hours and the pay they expect. Before it is shown, the request is checked, ads and contact details are removed from the text, and you get hints on what to add.
Your number is hidden and goes only to the chosen candidate. The post is active for 7 days and can be extended. It is free for the employer. More in “How it works”.
What to put in the job post
- Duties — making bouquets, selling, window displays, decoration, flower records;
- Type of place — flower shop, kiosk, decoration studio;
- Hours — for example 8 to 8 on alternate days, work on festive days;
- Pay — fixed pay, percentage of sales, pay per bouquet;
- Workplace — city and area, for example the city centre;
- Terms — for festive seasons or permanent, on the payroll;
- Experience — how many years, whether a portfolio is needed.
Example: “Florist needed for a flower shop in Wellington. Duties: making bouquets, selling, caring for flowers. Alternate-day shifts, 8 to 8, pay $380 a month, on the payroll, 1+ year of experience and a portfolio.”
How to assess a candidate
It is best to look at their work: ask for photos of bouquets or offer to make an arrangement on a trial day. Ask about flower care: how to cut stems, what water to keep them in, what to do in hot weather.
During festive peaks (Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, the festive season, wedding season) stamina and readiness for longer hours are needed. If you are looking for someone only for the peak, say so plainly, with the pay for such days.
Think about materials: who buys ribbons, wrap, baskets and delivery boxes, and whether the florist may suggest their own ideas. Also clarify how write-offs of wilted flowers are counted, because the worker's motivation depends on it.
