Gifts for kids: how to choose by age and not overpay
Age matters more than budget
The most common mistake with a child's gift is buying “by the age on the box” without thinking about what the child already has and what interests them. Small construction pieces are not for toddlers, and a teenager will turn down a toy that a child half their age would love. So in your request write the age, gender and interests straight away: dinosaurs, cars, drawing, football.
If you have no idea, say so. Sellers will suggest options within your budget, and you will see what is available and at what price.
What to put in your request
- Age and gender — for example, a boy of 7;
- Interests — what the child likes and what they play with now;
- Gift idea — a construction set, a board game, a craft kit, a voucher;
- Occasion — birthday, the festive season, New Year, first day of school, graduation;
- Quantity — if you need gifts for a class or a playgroup;
- Date needed — when you will hand it over;
- Delivery city — or pickup;
- Budget — per gift or for all.
Example: “Looking for a gift for a 7-year-old boy's birthday, he loves dinosaurs. A construction set or a fossil dig kit would be fine. Auckland, needed by 14 June, budget up to $63.”
How searching for a gift works here
Instead of going through dozens of shops, you write one request, and sellers of children's goods reply with their options: what exactly, what it costs, when they will bring it. How to compare options
- Check the age label on the item and whether small parts are a risk for toddlers.
- For electronics and toys with batteries, ask whether the batteries are included.
- Check whether it can be exchanged if the gift doesn't suit.
- Compare not only price but also contents: gift sets often differ in what's inside.
For a class or a playgroup, ask about the price per set at a bulk quantity and whether you can add an individual card.
Common mistakes
Many people buy on the eve of the occasion and pay extra for urgency. Before holidays and festivals there are more offers but demand is higher too, so send your request early. Don't forget safety: paints, plastic and soft toys should come from a trustworthy seller.
