Hair extensions: how to compare techniques, hair and stylist prices

The price has two parts: the hair and the work

This is where clients get confused most often. Some stylists quote a price with the hair included, others only for the work, and you buy the strands. The difference can be big, so the first thing to find out is whose hair it is and what the amount includes. If you already have your own hair for extensions, say so.

The cost is also affected by the technique, the number of strands, the length and the origin of the hair. European or Russian hair is usually pricier than Asian, and the shade may need matching or toning.

Techniques: what to choose

  • Hot capsule (Italian) — lasts long, but needs careful maintenance and suits thicker hair.
  • Micro-capsule — smaller capsules, less visible on fine hair.
  • Tape-in — quicker to do, needs regular refitting.
  • Hollywood (wefts) — on a fine base, usually for voluminous looks.

You do not have to know everything beforehand: describe the type and condition of your hair, and stylists will recommend a technique.

What to include in your request

  • Technique — if you have already decided.
  • First time or refit — new extensions, a refit or removal of the old ones.
  • Number of strands or grams, and length, for example 50 cm.
  • Hair type and colour — European, blonde and so on.
  • Whose hair — the stylist’s or yours.
  • Your own hair — length, thickness, colouring.
  • Date and time, area and budget.

Example: “I need capsule extensions, 150 strands of 50 cm, European hair, blonde, hair supplied by the stylist. My own hair is fine, shoulder length. Auckland, Saturday at 12:00. Budget up to $530.”

How to compare offers

Check several things at once: the number of strands, the length, the origin of the hair and whether the first refit is included. Ask when a refit is needed and what it costs, because extensions are not a one-time expense. Look at a portfolio in your technique and on similar hair.

Find out how the stylist removes extensions and whether that is included in the price. Ask for care advice: which comb and shampoo to use, how to tie your hair at night, how often to wash it. An honest stylist will gladly explain everything and will not hide the cost of later visits.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

You write your request on BlaBlaPrice once, and stylists in your city reply with offers: price, what is included, when they can see you. They see where they stand among the others, so they often improve their terms. The site shows the best-value offer first, reviews are visible alongside, and your phone number stays hidden until you choose a stylist. More on “How it works”.

Questions and answers

Which extension technique is best?

There is no single answer: it depends on how thick your hair is, the look you want and your budget. Describe your hair in the request and stylists will advise.

Is the hair included in the price?

It varies: some stylists quote with the hair included, others only for the work. So ask about this in every offer.

How often do I need a refit?

It depends on the technique and how fast your hair grows. The stylist will give an approximate time and the cost of a refit.

Can my own hair be used for extensions?

Yes, if it is good quality and matches in colour and texture. State in your request that the strands are yours.
