Kids' balls: hopper balls, ball pit balls and inflatable balls
First, what is the ball for?
Kids' balls come in very different kinds. A hopper ball with handles is for bouncing and practising balance, and a massage ball is for a fitball or for developing motor skills. Light inflatable balls are great for the bath or the garden, and a hundred plastic balls are meant for a ball pit. So decide the purpose first, and only then the size and the price.

Example: “I need a hopper ball with handles, 55 cm diameter, for a 4-year-old boy, odour-free PVC, with a pump. New. Wellington, courier delivery, budget up to $21.”
How to choose the size of a hopper ball
The diameter of a hopper ball is chosen by height: a child won't control a ball that is too big. As a general rule, when sitting on it a child should touch the floor with the whole foot, with the knees bent close to a right angle. Also check the maximum load stated by the manufacturer and whether a pump is included.
Balls for a ball pit
Here the diameter, the quantity and the quality of the plastic matter. Cheap balls can crack and have a sharp smell. The quantity depends on the size of the pit: a hundred is enough for a small play pen, and a bigger one needs several hundred. Ask about certification and smell, because these balls will pass through your child's hands many times.
Massage balls with spikes are used for a light massage of the feet and palms, and large fitballs for exercises under adult supervision. If the ball is for sport, check the size for the game, because football, basketball and volleyball balls differ in weight. Keep inflatable balls slightly under-inflated and away from sharp objects.
How to compare offers
- The diameter and the quantity in the set must match, otherwise the comparison is unfair.
- Whether a pump and a spare plug are included for inflatables.
- Whether the ball has a sharp smell.
- How much delivery costs: a net of balls can be bulky.
