Headlights, Indicators and Bulbs for Motorcycles: How to Buy

A bulb, a headlight or a whole optical unit

First work out what exactly needs replacing. If it does not light, sometimes a cheap bulb is enough. If the glass is broken, the housing is cracked or the reflector has burnt, you need a headlight or a unit. A motorcycle also has indicators, a tail light and a brake light, which are sold either as separate units or with wiring.

Bulb base and type of light source

Bulbs are told apart by their base: H4 (dual filament, low and high beam), H7, BA15s for indicators and position lights, W5W for small bulbs. LED is a topic of its own. An LED bulb in an old reflector headlight can give worse light or dazzle, because the optics are designed for a filament. If you want LED, ask whether it is made for a reflector headlight and how good the beam is. Xenon is rarely fitted to a motorcycle, and without the right lens it is dangerous for oncoming drivers.

For older motorcycles, such as the Yamaha DT 125, the headlight may be rare. Then give the size, diameter and mounting, and add a photo.

What to put in your request

  • which part — front headlight, indicators, tail light, brake light, bulb, LED lens;
  • bike model — for example Yamaha DT 125;
  • bulb type — H4, H7, BA15s, LED, halogen;
  • quantity — for example 2 pcs;
  • original or aftermarket;
  • condition — new, or used in working order;
  • delivery city and budget.

Example: “I need a front headlight for a Yamaha DT 125 in good condition, used with no cracks, and two H4 bulbs. Original or a compatible one. Delivery to Wellington, budget up to $42.”

How to compare offers

  • Bulb base and voltage: 12 V, or 6 V for very old models.
  • For a headlight: whether the glass, reflector and mounts are intact, and whether there is a connector.
  • For LED: power, whether there is a heatsink, and whether it is compatible with your voltage regulator.
  • For indicators: whether they suit the flasher relay, because LEDs may blink faster.

A typical mistake is to take a bulb that “looks the same” but has a different base. Another is to buy a headlight only from a photo without checking the mounting. If bulbs burn out too often, check the electrical system: the cause may be a faulty voltage regulator.

It is simpler through BlaBlaPrice

You write one request, and sellers reply in the chat with price, condition and delivery. Each sees where their offer stands, and so often improves the price. The site shows the best-value one first, with reviews of the seller beside it. Your phone number stays hidden. More in “How it works”.

If the light flickers or goes out, the cause may be a weak or faulty battery.

Questions and answers

Can I fit an LED bulb instead of a halogen one?

Physically it often fits, but in a reflector headlight the light may be worse. Ask the seller whether the bulb suits your type of headlight.

How do I find out the bulb base?

It is marked on the bulb itself or in the motorcycle’s manual, for example H4 or BA15s. You can show the old one in a photo.

Why do new indicators blink too fast?

This happens with LEDs, because the relay is designed for ordinary bulbs. Ask about compatibility or about resistors.

Does the seller see my contacts at once?

No, they are opened only to the seller you choose.
