Lost or found pet: how to write a notice that works

What to write when a pet is missing

The first hours and days matter most. The more exact the description, the better the chance that someone recognises the animal. Do not write just “dog lost”: give the species, breed, colour, size, collar or clothes, name and the place where it was last seen. Marks that a photo does not show (a spot on the belly, a torn ear, a scar) help most to tell your pet from a similar one.

If there is a microchip, a brand or a tag, mention it, but do not publish the number itself. You will give it only to the person who really found the animal, and that is how you check it is yours.

If you have found someone else's pet

A found dog or cat may have an owner who is already searching. Describe where and when you picked it up, what marks it has and whether it wears a collar. Keep one detail hidden so you can test the owner with a question: for example the colour of the collar, or the name it answers to. Do not hand the animal over to the first person who writes, without checking.

What to put in your request

  • species and breed, or “mixed breed”;
  • markings — colouring, spots, size, collar, clothes;
  • where it was lost or found — city, area, street, landmark;
  • when — date and approximate time;
  • sex and name;
  • microchip or tag — yes or no;
  • reward, if you offer one.

Example: “Lost: a Jack Russell terrier, male, called Bucky, white coat with brown patches on the back, blue collar without a tag, microchipped. Went missing on the evening of 28 September near a park in Auckland. Reward $44.”

Where else to search at the same time

One notice is not enough. Walk the neighbouring area, talk to watchmen and security guards, put up notices with a photo and a phone number, contact local groups and animal volunteers, and check the shelters. Often the animal hides close to the place it vanished, especially if it is frightened.

Beware of scammers who ask for money in advance “for delivery” or “for treatment”. Before paying a reward, make sure the animal really is yours: ask for a recent photo or video.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

You describe the situation on BlaBlaPrice, the site checks the text, and people who answer in this category in your area receive the request. They reply in the chat: what they saw, where and when. Your phone number stays hidden, and you give contacts only to someone you trust, by the channel you choose yourself. The request stays active for 7 days, and you can extend and edit it if new details appear. Read more on the How it works page.

When the search is over, look at the “Dogs” and “Cats” sections if you plan to get a new friend.

Questions and answers

What should I include so the animal is recognised?

The species, breed, colour, special marks, collar, name and the exact place it went missing. Add one clear photo if you have it.

Should I write the microchip number in the notice?

Better not. Say that there is a chip, and give the number to the person who found the animal, to check that it is really yours.

How long does the request stay active?

It stays active for 7 days and can be extended. While it is active, you can edit the text.
