Maternity and postnatal support belts: how to choose and buy
See your doctor first
A support belt is not just an accessory but a medical product, so decide with your gynaecologist whether you need one and which. The doctor will tell you from what week to wear it, for how many hours a day and whether you have any contraindications. This is especially important if you have placenta problems or a risk of preterm labour.
Once you have the advice, what is left is choosing a model by size and price. On BlaBlaPrice you describe what the doctor recommended, and sellers send offers in the chat with sizes, price and delivery. It is free for the buyer, and contacts are hidden.
Types of support belts
- Prenatal — supports the bump and lower back, as briefs, a belt or a wide band;
- Postnatal — holds the tummy after birth, often a separate one for a C-section;
- Universal — adjustable, fits both before and after birth, but comfort depends on the model.
What to put in your request
- type of belt — prenatal, postnatal, universal, briefs or belt;
- stage of pregnancy — the week, or “after birth”;
- size — waist and hip measurements in centimetres: more accurate than letters;
- doctor's indication — for example, low-lying placenta; don't make it up, write what the doctor said;
- level of support — light, medium, strong;
- brand, if one was recommended;
- condition and budget.
Example: “I need a new universal support belt for before and after birth, 30 weeks, hips 100 cm, medium support. My doctor recommends it because of a low-lying placenta. Hamilton, budget up to $32.”
What to look at in a model
The material should be breathable, cotton with elastane, with no rough seams. Velcro closures let you adjust the tightness as the pregnancy goes on. The belt should not press on the bump from below: its job is to support, not to squeeze. Ask whether it has stiffening ribs, and how to wash it.
Condition: for hygiene reasons these items are usually bought new. Decide the size by measurements, not by the letter: they differ between makers.
How to compare offers
Compare the type, size, level of support and fabric. Ask about exchange terms: if the belt does not fit, this should be clear in advance. BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, with seller reviews next to each one.
Sellers can see where they stand among the others and may improve their terms. Read how the service works on the “How it works” page. For extra comfort, also see underwear, trousers and leggings and other items in “Maternity wear”.
