Tree felling and pruning: how to book it safely and at a fair price
Height is not the only thing that sets the price
If a tree stands far from buildings on open ground, it can simply be felled. If there is a roof, wires or a neighbour's wall nearby, the tree is taken down in sections from the top, with ropes and safety gear, and that is a completely different job. So trees of the same height cost differently in different conditions.
The trunk thickness, the species (mango, neem and eucalyptus differ in hardness and brittleness) and the number of trees also matter. Pruning ten small fruit trees is one task, while one dangerous tree over a roof is quite another.
Felling, pruning, stump removal: three different jobs
- Felling — the tree is removed and a stump remains.
- Sanitary and shaping pruning — dead and diseased branches are removed and the crown is shaped. For fruit trees timing matters, so agree it with the professional.
- Crown reduction — the tree stays, but hangs less over the house.
- Stump removal — a separate job that is often forgotten.
How to find professionals through BlaBlaPrice
You describe the job in one request and add a photo of the tree with the house or wires in the frame. BlaBlaPrice checks the request and points out what the professionals are missing, and then crews in your area send offers in the chat: the price or what it depends on, the date, and whether equipment is needed. BlaBlaPrice shows the best offer by content first, with reviews next to it. Your phone stays hidden until you choose a professional. How it all works is on the “How it works” page.
What to include in your request
- What to do — felling, pruning, crown reduction, stump removal.
- Height and girth — for example, 50 ft, trunk diameter 2 ft. If you don't know exactly, write an estimate and add a photo.
- Species and number of trees.
- Site conditions — roof, wires, wall, narrow access, whether a climber or a crane is needed.
- Removal of branches — take away, chip, or cut into firewood.
- Address or area, when and budget.
Example: “Tauranga, independent house. I need a dangerous mango tree about 50 ft high and 2 ft in diameter felled; it grows over the roof and next to power lines. Branches to be taken away, the trunk cut into 3-ft logs. Preferably before the rainy season, budget up to $150.”
What to agree before the work starts
Ask whether clearing up is included in the price: branches and sawdust are a lot of rubbish. Find out who is responsible for damage if something falls on a roof or wall, and whether the crew has insurance and the right equipment. Trees near power lines are dangerous, so discuss the wires beforehand. In many cities you need permission from the local authority to fell a tree, so check this locally.
Out of season, crews are usually less busy, so you can give flexible dates in the request. Need help with the whole grounds? Take a look at gardening services, and rubbish removal will help clear away the branches and debris.
