UPS for a Pump, Computer and Router: Offers from Sellers

Start with the load

You buy a UPS for whatever will be plugged into it. A router and a computer need only a compact model, but a water pump or a fridge needs a different one: more powerful, with a different output waveform. So first write down what exactly you will power and how many watts it draws.

On BlaBlaPrice you describe the task once, and sellers send offers with price and terms. No calls: only the seller you choose sees your contacts.

Pure sine wave for pumps and motors

Many pumps and other motor-driven appliances need a pure sine wave on the input, and a UPS with a “stepped” sine wave can cause faults or noise. For computers a simplified waveform is usually enough, but many appliance makers state a pure sine wave in the manual. Check the requirement in the appliance's manual.

Power and backup time

  • VA and W. The rated power in VA is higher than the real power in W. Go by the watts, and leave a margin for the starting current of a pump or fridge.
  • Battery. Compact models have small batteries: that means minutes, or a couple of hours for a router. For longer backup, take a model with an external battery.
  • Battery voltage. 12 V, 24 V or more; the more powerful the UPS, the more often you need 24 V and above.
  • Battery type. AGM, gel or LiFePO4; the lifespan depends on it.

What to put in your request

  • What to connect and for how long.
  • Power in VA or W.
  • Waveform: pure sine wave or not.
  • Batteries: built-in or external, type, capacity.
  • New or used, model or brand.
  • Connection: whether you need an electrician for the pump.
  • Warranty and budget.

Example: “I need a pure sine wave UPS for a water pump and a router, 1000 VA, with an external 100 Ah battery to keep them going for a few hours. With installation by an electrician, delivery to Wellington, budget up to $530.”

How to compare offers

Check whether the battery is included: some offers quote the unit only, others come with the battery. Check the waveform, the power in watts, and the warranty on the unit and on the battery separately. For a pump, ask whether it stays on during the switchover to battery.

BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, with reviews of the seller alongside. Sellers see their place and improve their terms. Details are in the “How it works” section.

For a bigger reserve, look at separate batteries, and for a mobile option, portable power stations. If the problem is voltage swings, a voltage stabiliser will help.

Questions and answers

Will an ordinary UPS work for a water pump?

Not always: many pumps need a pure sine wave. Check the power requirements in the manual and write them in your request.

How do I work out the backup time?

It depends on the battery capacity and the load. Write in your request what you connect and how many hours you need, and sellers will work out an option.

What is the difference between VA and W?

VA is apparent power, W is the real power the UPS actually delivers. W is usually lower, so go by that.

Can I buy a used UPS?

You can, but batteries in used units are often worn. Ask whether it is the unit only or with the battery, and what the battery's history is.
