What you can order in glass
Glass items are made to a specific size: a table top or table, a bathroom mirror, a shower screen, glass doors, a kitchen backsplash, shelves, partitions. Each item has its own requirements for thickness and finishing. So the request “I need glass” says nothing, while “shower screen 80×200 cm, toughened 8 mm” lets the workshop price it at once.
Type of glass
- Toughened — stronger than ordinary glass, and when it breaks it forms small, safe pieces; for showers, tables, doors.
- Laminated — two sheets of glass with a film between them, it does not shatter; for canopies, stairs, railings.
- Ordinary (float) — for shelves, frames, mirrors where no extra strength is needed.
- Frosted, tinted, painted — decorative options that hide what is behind or add colour; a backsplash is often painted on the back.
Edge finishing and holes
The edges of glass are polished so they can be touched without risk of a cut. A mirror can be made with a bevel (an angled edge), with holes for fixings, or with lighting. Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening, so all dimensions, holes and cut-outs are specified before it is made. That is the main reason it is better to leave the measuring to the workshop.
What to put in your request
- What you need — a table top, mirror, screen, door, backsplash, shelves.
- Dimensions — width × height (and shape), for example 80×120 cm.
- Type and thickness of glass — toughened 8 mm, laminated, frosted.
- Edge finishing — polishing, bevel, holes, cut-outs, sandblasting.
- Lighting and fittings — LED, a heater against misting, hinges, profiles, handles.
- Quantity — for example, 3 shelves.
- Measuring and installation — whether you need them.
- City, timing and budget.

What to look at when comparing
Compare offers with the same thickness, type of glass and finishing: “8 mm” and “6 mm” give a different price and strength. Ask who takes the measurements and whether the item can be returned if the size turns out inaccurate. Find out whether fixings, fittings, lighting and delivery are in the price. Glass is fragile, so delivery and carrying up to a floor need care, and it is worth discussing this beforehand.
