How to find a mechanic: repairs and servicing of machinery
Fleet, workshop or equipment mechanic: different jobs
The word “mechanic” hides several trades. One looks after a fleet of trucks: inspection, repairs, getting vehicles back on the road. Another services machine tools and press equipment in a factory; another works on farm machinery or refrigeration units. If the post says only “mechanic”, people with very different experience will apply and you will lose time sorting them out.
What makes a good mechanic
Besides repair skills, planning matters: a servicing schedule, spare parts records, a repair log and fast diagnosis. In a senior role the mechanic also organises fitters or drivers, so ask about experience of leading a team. For a fleet, electrical and diagnostic knowledge usually matters; for a factory, hydraulics, pneumatics and machine mechanics.
Think about tools and conditions too: is there a pit or a lift, a spare parts store, a diagnostic scanner? A mechanic who sees that everything needed for the job is there accepts an offer more readily, and you pay less for machines standing idle.
What to put in the job post
- Equipment — truck fleet, machine tools, production lines, farm machinery;
- Duties — repairs and servicing, diagnostics, spare parts records, leading a crew;
- Qualification and experience — for example trade certificate or diploma, 3+ years;
- Hours — regular week, on-call duty, site visits;
- Pay — monthly salary, bonuses, allowances;
- Workplace — city, depot, whether a repair bay and tools are provided;
- Terms — permanent, on the payroll, contract.
Example: “Mechanic needed in Makati for a fleet of 15 trucks. Repairs and servicing, diagnostics, spare parts records, 3+ years of experience, diploma or trade certificate. Six-day week, on the payroll, from ₱23,000 a month, own repair bay and tools provided.”
How to search through BlaBlaPrice
You describe the job once and don't have to repeat it on five sites. The request is checked for ads and stray contact details, and you get hints on what is missing. Candidates in your area answer in chat: experience, which machines they have worked on, when they can start, expected pay. Reviews are shown next to each reply. The phone number stays hidden until you choose someone. More on the “How it works” page.
How to test a candidate in practice
Ask them to talk through a typical fault: what do they check first and why? Ask how they plan servicing so the equipment doesn't stop in the busy season. Ask which tools and diagnostic equipment they know. If the equipment is complex, agree on a trial day. When you need narrower specialists, see also an electrician, a lathe operator or a welder.
