Power tillers for your garden: how to choose and buy without overpaying
Power tiller or walk-behind tractor
A power tiller is light equipment for loosening soil, weeding, earthing up and ploughing small plots. It usually suits a vegetable garden from a few hundred up to about 1,500 square metres. For clay soil and bigger areas it is better to take a walk-behind tractor, because a tiller may lack the weight and pull.
How to pick a model
- Engine: a four-stroke petrol engine is the most common. Two-stroke ones are lighter but louder and need fuel mixed with oil.
- Power: about 3–4 hp for light soil, 5–7 hp for denser soil.
- Working width: from 30 to 90 cm. A wide one is faster, but heavier and harder to get between rows.
- Weight: a light tiller is easy to handle, but on heavy soil it “jumps”, and then you need a heavier one.
- Gearbox: a cast-iron one that can be opened up is better than a sealed aluminium one. It decides how long the machine lasts.
- Reverse gear, working depth, the number of tines.
What to put in your request
- engine type — most often petrol;
- condition — new or used;
- power, for example 6 hp;
- working width — 60 cm or another;
- size of the plot and the type of soil;
- model, if you have already chosen, such as a Honda or similar;
- delivery city and the courier you prefer;
- budget, if you want to name one.
Example: “I am looking for a new petrol power tiller of 6 hp, working width 60 cm, with reverse gear. A vegetable plot of about 600 square metres, light loam soil. Courier delivery to Makati, budget up to ₱22,000. A Honda or something similar is preferred.”
How to compare offers
Match the set: some prices include tines and wheels, others make you buy them extra. Ask where the engine comes from: Japanese, European and Chinese engines behave differently in life and service. Find out whether there is a warranty and service centres in your region, and whether parts and blades are easy to get.
Models that look alike can have different gearboxes. Ask whether it can be opened up and what oil it has. For used ones, ask for a video of starting, photos of the tines, and check the play in the shafts.
Common mistakes
Many people take a powerful, heavy tiller for a small garden and then cannot turn it between the beds. Another mistake is buying a model with no service nearby: a belt, a spark plug or a tine wears out, and the parts must be close at hand. Also check whether the guard discs, wheels and earthing-up attachment come in the set, because they are often sold separately.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You do not walk round shops, you write one request. Sellers reply in chat with the price, the set and delivery, and the system compares the offers and shows the best one first. Your phone is hidden, and it is free for the buyer.
For a larger plot, look at walk-behind tractors, and for a big farm, mini tractors. Implements and attachments go with the machine.
