Sanding and painting a log or wooden house
Why a wooden house needs a special approach
Wood moves: it dries, swells, cracks and darkens in the sun. So an ordinary painter is often not the right person. A log or timber house needs craftsmen who know how treating a log differs from treating timber, how to sand weathered grey wood and where caulking is needed.
The work usually has several stages: cleaning or sanding the old coating, treatment with an antiseptic or fire retardant, sealing the joints between logs, and the final coat of oil, stain or paint.
What kinds of work there are
- Sanding walls, ends and floors, by hand or machine, sometimes with sandblasting.
- Caulking and “warm” sealing of joints between the logs.
- Bleaching darkened or greyed wood.
- Restoration: removing old paint and mouldy patches, treating cracks.
- Painting with oil, stain or opaque paint.
If you do not know what you need, describe the condition of the walls and add photos: the craftsmen will suggest where to start.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You write one request: where the house is, its area, what is wrong with the wood. Offers come from craftsmen who work in your area. They give a price, or what it depends on, plus timing and materials, and you compare everything in one chat. Contractors compete for the request, so terms often get better. You pass your contacts only to the craftsman you choose.
What to put in your request
- Type of work — sanding, painting, caulking, bleaching, restoration.
- Area — in sq ft of walls or the size of the house.
- What to treat — outside, inside or both; log or timber walls, ends, floor.
- Condition of the wood — greyed, old paint, mould, cracks.
- Materials — which oil, stain or paint, the brand, whose materials.
- Floors — how many storeys, whether scaffolding or a lift is needed.
- Address, timing, budget — where the house is, when to start, a sum if you want to name one.
Example: “Manali, Himachal Pradesh. A log house, 2 storeys, about 2,700 sq ft outside. The wood has darkened, with old paint in places. I need sanding and an oil finish, my materials. Finish by the end of the month, budget up to ₱110,000.”
What to look at in the offers
First level the terms: the same area, the same set of work, the same coating. Ask how many coats are applied and whether a primer or antiseptic is used. A cheap offer often means one coat “for looks” that peels off in a season or two.
Find out who buys the materials: good oil or stain is a large part of the budget. It is also worth asking how the craftsman protects windows, roofs and the plinth from stains, and whether scaffolding is in the price.
What to remember before you start
Painting should be done in dry weather and on dry wood, so season and humidity matter, and the rainy season is a poor time. Some oils need renewing every few years: ask what care the house will need. If other building work is planned nearby, see turnkey renovation or finishing work. Read how the service works on the “How it works” page.
