Car dashcam: how to choose and buy one at a good price
Form factor: which is more convenient for you
A dashcam has to be not only good but also convenient in your car.
- A compact one mounts behind the mirror and is almost invisible.
- A mirror dashcam replaces the standard mirror, often with a reversing camera. The screen is big, but it needs careful fitting.
- A dual-channel one records the road ahead and behind. Useful when you need to capture everything.
- A hidden one is fitted under the trim and is barely visible, so it needs installation.
What affects the quality of the recording
Resolution (Full HD, 2K, 4K) is important, but not the only thing. For number plates at night, the sensor and the optics matter more, and so do WDR or HDR (balancing the light). So look at real night videos in reviews, not only at the numbers. Think about the heat too: in the cabin in summer a battery overheats, so a supercapacitor is often more reliable.

- GPS records the speed and the route, which can be useful as evidence.
- Wi-Fi lets you move the video to your phone.
- Parking mode records on impact or movement, but needs constant power.
- A G-sensor locks the recording on impact so it is not overwritten.
- ADAS warns about lane departure or a close distance.
Ask also about the memory card: you need a high-endurance one made for constant overwriting, with a capacity of, for example, 64 GB.

How to compare offers
Look at the set: memory card, power cable, rear camera, mount. Some sellers add these and some do not. Ask whether the price includes fitting, especially hidden fitting, and whether there is a warranty. For a used one, check that the mount holds and that the lens is not cracked.
