How to order lab tests at a good price: costs, turnaround, home collection
Where to start: what exactly to test
The most common reason for overpaying for tests is a vague list. “Get a blood test” means nothing: a complete blood count, biochemistry, thyroid hormones and an infection panel are different packages at different prices. If a doctor has already written a prescription, copy the test names exactly, including abbreviations, for example TSH or free T4.
If you have no prescription and just want to check your health, choose a ready-made health check-up package and ask the labs to list what it includes. The results are usually interpreted by a doctor, so do not leave the question “what do I do with this” for later.
What to include in your request
- Which tests — the full list or the name of the panel: hormones, PCR, allergy panel, biochemistry.
- Home collection — whether you need a phlebotomist to visit, and the address.
- Patient — adult, child (age) or pregnant woman: children and pregnant women have different normal ranges and sometimes different tubes.
- Urgency — whether you need the result within a day or can wait.
- Laboratory — if you want a particular chain or an explanation by a doctor.
- When — the day and preferred time of collection, usually in the morning on an empty stomach.
- City and area and budget, if you want to state it.
Example: “I need TSH, free T4 and anti-TPO antibodies for a 34-year-old woman. Home collection tomorrow morning on an empty stomach, Rawalpindi. Result preferably within 1 day, budget up to Rs 5,800.”
How to compare offers
Compare more than the total. Check whether the price includes blood collection, the phlebotomist’s visit and the tubes, or whether these are separate lines. Ask in how many days the result will be ready and in what form: by email, in an app or on paper.
It is important that all offers have the same list of parameters. The same “hormone profile” can have a different make-up in two places. Also ask separately whether a doctor’s consultation to explain the results is included.
Preparation and common mistakes
- Not preparing: most blood tests are taken on an empty stomach, and for some hormones the day of the cycle matters. Ask about it before collection.
- Testing at different labs and comparing the numbers: each lab’s reference ranges can differ.
- Forgetting the validity period: some results must be recent for the doctor or the clinic.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You write your request once, and labs and collection services reply with offers in chat: what is included, how much it costs, when the results will be ready. Before it is shown, your request is checked and you get hints about missing details. BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, with reviews next to each one. Your phone number is hidden, and only the one you choose will see it. It is free for patients, and the details are on the “How it works” page.
