Load limits and roof capacity

Never load more than the lower of two numbers: the roof weight capacity set by the vehicle manufacturer and the limit of the rack system itself. Many universal racks are rated at 150 to 250 lb, which is about 68 to 113 kg, so check the figure in your car's manual before you load it. A basket of about 64 inches by 39 inches measures roughly 163 cm by 99 cm, which helps when you check the roof length.

Rules and securing the load

A legal source notes that only 15 states have laws on improperly secured loads, but items that drop from a roof can create liability in all 50 states. The federal safety agency has not set out roof rack standards in the sources we found, so the vehicle manual is your main guide. Check the straps, clamps and fittings before each long trip, and recheck them after the first few miles.

Warranty and what the seller covers

Warranties differ by brand. One rack maker gives five years on its Pioneer roof platforms and other roof trays, and one year on some other products. One brand's limited lifetime warranty covers some products bought after March 1, 2006. The manufacturer's guarantee covers defects in material and manufacturing, but not damage from wear. Ask for the warranty in writing and check whether it covers the mounting hardware.

Season and fit

From December to February the northern hemisphere is in winter, and snow and road salt in Chicago and New York make it harder to fit and remove a rack. Cargo boxes see most use on summer trips from June to August. In Phoenix, summer heat is strong, so check whether the box is rated for the temperature it will sit in during the trip.

On BlaBlaPrice you describe the rack in your own words in a chat, and you can add a photo of your roof rails or the car. The AI reads the request, asks for anything missing and looks through sellers' websites and price lists in the United States, then shows the prices and businesses it found. Sellers registered on BlaBlaPrice receive your request and answer in the chat with their own offer, including price, terms and delivery. Your contacts stay hidden until you decide with whom to exchange them. For related products, see Car accessories, or start a request on the BlaBlaPrice home page.
