Seat covers, car covers & tarps

Seat covers, car covers and tarps: prices and rules in the USA

Universal waterproof seat covers in the United States start at about $6 for a basic front or rear set, and custom-fit canvas covers for a specific model cost from about $296. Most listed universal sets sit between about $10 and $55. For current offers that match your car, post a request on BlaBlaPrice.

Federal rules for covers

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has said that no federal safety standard applies directly to aftermarket slip-on seat covers, although standards do apply to vehicle seating systems. A cover should not block seat adjustment, the seat belt, or any airbag or sensor built into the seat. Check the label and fit before you buy, especially on a heated or power seat.

Warranty and what to ask

Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a written warranty cannot be undercut by disclaimers used in an unfair or misleading way. In listings, custom covers often carry a one-year or three-year limited warranty against defects in materials or workmanship. Ask whether it covers fading and tearing, who pays the return shipping, and how a claim is made.

Seasons and the wet months

The climate here has winters from December to February and summers from June to August. Waterproof covers pay off most in winter and early spring, when wet boots and slush reach the seats, while summer sun and heat wear down upholstery. Car covers and tarps are used through all four seasons.

How covers are bought here

Covers are sold by car make, model, year and seat layout, such as a two-seat, five-seat or full seven-seat set, sometimes with a split rear bench. Sellers list sizes in inches, so measure the seat width and height before you order. Delivery runs between cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and Phoenix. Ask about shipping time and returns before you pay.

What to write in your request

Name the car model and year, the seats you need covered, the material (waterproof canvas, Oxford or neoprene), whether the cover must be model-specific or universal, the number of seats, the color, and the city for delivery. Add your budget. The more you state, the closer the offers will fit your car.
